PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Plymouth State University scored the final three goals to hand Plattsburgh State a 3-2 defeat in its season-opening game on Friday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State (0-1-0) next hosts Castleton University in a non-conference game tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals are honoring all-time great Chris Panek before the game as part of Chris Panek Night. Plymouth State (1-0-0) hosts Babson College in a non-conference game tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Hanaway Rink.
Plattsburgh State took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Pavel Kharin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Johnstown Tomahawks) scored his first career goal 37 seconds into the game. Junior forward Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johnstown Tomahawks) passed the puck forward to Kharin in front of the net, who scored with a deke.
The score remained the same until the 2:58 mark of the second period when Hale scored with a high wrist shot from the right circle. Sophomore forward Joey Mancuso (Pottstown, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) and junior defenseman Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) garnered the assists on the goal that made the score 2-0.
Plattsburgh State retained its 2-0 lead until 10:24 of the second period when Plymouth State's sophomore forward Jeromy Rancourt scored on a wrist shot from the lower-left circle that went in off the right post to make the score 2-1. Junior defenseman Ted Austin and senior defenseman Simon Besner record the assists.
In the third period, Plymouth State tied the game at 2-2 on an unassisted goal by junior forward Myles Abbate. Shorthanded, Abbate forced a turnover at the Cardinal blue line, skated down the ice into the left circle and beat the Cardinal goaltender with a wrist shot on the glove side.
The Cardinal had scoring opportunities as time wound down in regulation, but Plymouth State's junior forward Marcus Seidl would score the game-winning goal at 14:30. Seidl took a step out from the left sideboards and scored with a wrist shot that went in high off the right post to make the score 3-2. Senior forward Grant Dewitt and junior defenseman Ted Austin picked up the assists.
Making his first career start, sophomore goaltender Anthony Del Tufo (Livingston, N.J./Philadelphia Revolution) made 25 saves for Plattsburgh State.
Sophomore netminder Kalle Anderson (1-0-0) stopped 37 shots for Plymouth State.
The Cardinals held a 39-28 edge in shots on goal.
Neither team converted on the power play. Plattsburgh State was 0-of-5 and Plymouth State was 0-of-4.
