Women's Soccer Suffers 2-1 Setback to SUNY New Paltz

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback to SUNY New Paltz in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match on Saturday afternoon at the Field House Complex.

Plattsburgh State (6-2-2, 3-1-0 SUNYAC), which had a four-game winning streak snapped, travels to Buffalo State for a SUNYAC match at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8. New Paltz (4-4-1, 2-2-0 SUNYAC) travels to Vassar College for a non-conference game at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The first half was tightly contested, but Plattsburgh State fell behind 2-0.

New Paltz used a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Lisette Palomo played a corner kick from the left corner. In the box, Jess Funke scored the goal with a header into the right side of the net.

The score remained 1-0 until the 32nd minute when Siena Diaz-Colon launched a long-range arching shot from the top of the Hawks' attacking third. The shot went over the top of Plattsburgh State's junior goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic), who lept but was unable to get a hand on the shot. The goal pushed the Hawks' lead to 2-0.

Plattsburgh State scored what turned out to be its only goal of the game in the 51st minute. Senior forward Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) drew a foul in the 18-yard box and then scored on the ensuing penalty kick to make the score 2-1. The goal was the third of the season for Villemaire.

Plattsburgh State fought to find the equalizing goal, but the Cardinals were unable to score again as New Paltz held on for the 2-1 victory.

Ennis (6-2-2) made three saves in goal for Plattsburgh State, while Kyra Russon (4-4-1) stopped five shots for New Paltz.

New Paltz held a 13-12 edge in shots. Plattsburgh State had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
