Women's Lacrosse Continues Historic Start With 23-7 Win Over Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team extended its perfect start to the 2020 season, defeating Castleton University, 23-7, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium.
 
The Cardinals bettered the program record in goals in a game with 23, topping the previous mark of 20 that they achieved on March 4 at Norwich University, and tied the program record for margin of victory (16 goals). Plattsburgh State also improved upon its single-season wins record with four.
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 4-0 overall with the win and next hosts Bard College on Friday, March 13, at 5 p.m. Castleton drops to 1-4 overall with the loss and next hosts Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday, March 12, at 4 p.m.
 
While Castleton's senior midfielder Morgan Derosia scored the first goal of the game 43 seconds into the contest, the Cardinals responded with seven unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead. Junior midfielder Frankie Porcaro (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) and sophomore attacker Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) each scored twice, while sophomore attacker/midfielder Allie Vangas (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall), freshman attacker Katie Kallamni (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and freshman attacker/defender Deja Richardson (Rochester, N.Y./Sperry) all scored once during that stretch. Derosia broke up the surge before freshman midfielder/attacker Lindsay Guzzetta (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and Vangas scored once and Richardson scored twice to pin Plattsburgh State to an 11-2 cushion. Senior attacker/midfielder Erin Shuttle found the back of the net for the Spartans with 12:02 left in the first half before Porcaro, Vangas, Caoili and Guzzetta all tallied to extend the Cardinal cushion to 15-3. Shuttle scored the final goal of the half to cut Castleton's deficit to 15-4 heading into halftime.
 
Senior midfielder Kerri Corcoran (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Porcaro each scored in the opening 2:30 of the second half, while freshman attacker/defender Madeleine Brasser tallied for Castleton. Freshman midfielder Caroline Noia (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) netted her first collegiate goal with 17:41 remaining in regulation, while Derosia pulled the Spartans within 18-6 with 14:40 left. Vangas countered with a goal less than two minutes later before senior attacker Katelyn McGlauflin (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) rattled the back of the cage with her first goal of the season. Shuttle scored what wound up being Castleton's final goal of the evening with 6:20 remaining, while freshman attacker Rhiannon Morgenroth (Clay, N.Y./Liverpool) scored her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate appearance. Vangas and Noia scored in the final 1:52 of action to seal the 23-7 win for the Cardinals.
 
Vangas scored a career-high five goals to lead the Plattsburgh State attack, while Porcaro netted four markers. Caoili and Richardson each registered five points on three goals and two assists. Porcaro controlled a career-high-tying seven draws, while Kallamni caused a career-high four turnovers. Guzzetta posted a balanced stat line of five ground balls, three caused turnovers, two goals and two draw controls.
 
For Castleton, Shuttle and Derosia each scored three goals, while Shuttle added five draw controls.
 
Freshman goalie Sarah Braja (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) and sophomore goalie Alexa Cassidy (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick) each turned aside two shots splitting time in net for the Cardinals, while sophomore goalie Raven Payne made 15 saves in the loss for the Spartans.
