PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) matched a career high in points with 28, but the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell to Fredonia, 70-58, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Friday night at Memorial Hall.
Durnin scored her 28 points on 11-of-25 shooting from the floor and 6-of-14 shooting from 3-point range. Both her total field goals made and her 3-point field goals made served as career-high totals. Senior forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) joined her in double figures with 10 points, while sophomore guard
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) handed out five assists.
The Cardinals shot 29 percent (20-of-69) from the floor and 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from 3-point distance in addition to forcing the Blue Devils into 22 turnovers. Fredonia held a 46-35 advantage in rebounds and shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field and 80 percent (16-of-20) from the line.
Plattsburgh State drops to 6-14 overall (3-10 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts Buffalo State tomorrow at 2 p.m. Fredonia rises to 8-12 overall (4-9 SUNYAC) with the win and visits SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Fredonia never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 1:11 of the game. The Cardinals pulled within one at 10-9 following a Durnin 3-pointer that capped a 5-0 spurt, and a Blue Devil jumper by junior guard Jayla James put Fredonia in front, 16-12, through one quarter of play.
The Blue Devils ballooned their lead to as many as 13 points in the second quarter, but a Durnin trey with 28 seconds left in the stanza brought Plattsburgh State back within 10. Senior guard Anna Chiacchia got fouled in the final second of the first half and went 1-of-2 at the line to hand Fredonia a 28-17 halftime lead.
While the Blue Devils recaptured a 13-point lead after a 3-pointer by sophomore guard/forward Katie Pitcher with 3:38 to go in the third, the Cardinals netted five unanswered points, and junior guard
Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y./Keene Central) made a free throw to trim the gap to 39-31. Fredonia extended its lead back out to double digits and took a 44-33 advantage into the final regulation stanza.
An 8-2 surge by Fredonia to open up the fourth quarter pinned the Blue Devils to their largest lead of the game (52-35), and while the Cardinals twice came within 10 points late on a Durnin 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by sophomore guard
Ly'rell Walker (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt), Fredonia held on for the 69-56 win.
Fredonia placed four players in double figures, led by a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double by Chiacchia. Pitcher, sophomore guard/forward Lauren Mickley and junior guard Rae White added 16, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
