POTSDAM, N.Y. — The forward line of senior and alternate captain Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) and freshmen Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johnstown Tomahawks) combined for four goals and 10 points to help Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey to a 6-5 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday night at Maxcy Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State, which improved to 7-13-3 (4-8-2 SUNYAC) hosts Morrisville State for a two-game SUNYAC series on Friday, Feb. 21 (Faculty Appreciation Night), and Saturday, Feb. 22 (Senior Night), at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on both days. Potsdam (6-16-2, 5-9-2 SUNYAC) plays a non-conference game at SUNY Canton on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m.
Drabin and Tretowicz each tallied two goals and two assists for four points in the game, while Hale added two assists to give their line 10 points in the game.
Plattsburgh State started the game fast — scoring three goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead over Potsdam into the first intermission.
Thirty-four seconds into the game, Drabin tallied his sixth goal of the season, assisted by Hale and Tretowicz, to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead. Hale passed the puck from behind the Potsdam net to Drabin, who was below and to the left of the right face-off dot. Drabin took an initial shot that was saved, but he knocked in his own rebound for the goal.
The score remained 1-0 until 11:07 of the first period when Tretowicz scored his first goal of the game, assisted by sophomore defenseman Austin Anselmo (Trail, British Columbia/University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) and Drabin. Looking for a redirect, Anselmo sent the puck from the high slot to the right of the crease where Tretowicz redirected the puck into the net to increase the Plattsburgh State lead to 2-0.
Scoring the final goal of the first period, freshman defenseman Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) made the score 3-0 in favor of Plattsburgh State with his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, at the 13:37 mark. On an outstanding individual effort, Hogg circled from the right point around to the left side of the Bears' defensive zone and sliced to the net where he scored on a deke.
In the second period, Potsdam scored the first two goals of the period, before Plattsburgh State answered with a goal to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Cardinals going into the second intermission.
The Bears got on the scoreboard at 5:13 of the second period when Thomas Terranova scored, with the assists credited to Joey Sollazzo and Joseph Richardson. An initial shot from the left sideboards was saved, but Terranova — crashing to the net — was able to knock in the rebound to cut the Plattsburgh State lead to 3-1.
A little over a minute later, Plattsburgh State's lead was narrowed to 3-2 when Bryce Ferrell scored at the 6:21 mark. A Bear cut to the Plattsburgh State net through the right circle and fired a shot from close range that was saved. However, Ferrell crashed the net and scored on the rebound. Jack Bloem and Michael Paglucca garnered the assists.
With time winding down in the second period, Drabin answered for Plattsburgh State to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Cardinals at 18:50 of the second period. A Potsdam turnover in the neutral zone led to a 2-on-1 rush for Plattsburgh State with Drabin scoring his second goal of the game on a high wrist shot from the slot. Tretowicz and Hale assisted on Drabin's seventh goal of 2019-20.
Starting the third period on a power play, Potsdam's Robert Clerc scored a power-play goal, assisted by Brett Horn and Richardson, at the 1:13 mark. A Potsdam player skated the puck from the left circle to the front of the Plattsburgh State where he tried a deke. The player lost the puck, but it ended up on the stick of Clerc, who scored from the right side of the net.
Potsdam would tie the game on a shorthanded goal at 6:30 of the third period. Paul Michura forced a turnover just inside the Potsdam blue line. Michura then skated down the ice on a breakaway and scored with a deke to tie the game at 4-4.
The score stayed tied until Tretowicz gave Plattsburgh State a 5-4 lead with his second goal of the night and seventh of the season at 14:13 of the third period. A shot taken by Drabin from the right circle was saved, but the rebound bounced to Tretowicz in the slot and he promptly deposited the puck into the back of the net. Drabin garnered the lone assist.
Senior forward and alternate captain Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara University) made the score 6-4 with an empty-net goal with 58 seconds remaining in regulation.
Potsdam's Devin Panzeca scored for Potsdam on a shot from in front of the net with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Horn and Connor Cruickshank assisted on the goal that made the score 6-5 in favor of Plattsburgh State. However, Plattsburgh State was able to hold off Potsdam to complete the 6-5 victory.
Junior goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (7-9-3) made 30 saves, including 14 in the third period, for Plattsburgh State. Michael Paglucca (4-10-2) stopped 27 shots for Potsdam.
Shots on goal were 35-33 in favor of the Bears.
Plattsburgh State finished 0-of-1 on the power play. Potsdam went 1-of-4 on the power play and scored a shorthanded goal.
