Five Reach Double Figures in Men's Basketball's 94-72 Loss to Brockport

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Five Cardinals reached double figures, but the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team dropped a 94-72 decision to The College at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

The Cardinals shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor and trailed by just two in the rebounding department (42-40), but they were hurt by 25 turnovers and an uncharacteristic 57.1 percent (16-of-28) performance from the line. The Golden Eagles shot 46.1 percent (36-of-76) from the floor and 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from 3-point range for the game while committing just 10 turnovers. Brockport also received 41 points from its bench.

Plattsburgh State falls to 4-7 overall (1-3 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Brockport rises to 8-3 overall (3-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts Buffalo State on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

After Brockport took a 13-6 lead, Plattsburgh State surged back with a 12-2 run, and a jumper by senior guard Nick DeAngelis (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) staked the Cardinals to an 18-15 advantage. The Golden Eagles took the lead on the strength of five unanswered points, and the two teams traded baskets until an 11-2 run put Brockport in front, 39-29. The Golden Eagles wound up entering the locker rooms with a 46-35 lead.

Senior forward Adam Jaquish (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) opened the second half by scoring on an old-fashioned 3-point play, and he answered a Brockport basket by senior forward Justin Summers with a layup on Plattsburgh State's next trip down the floor. Nearly three minutes transpired before either team altered the score, but the Golden Eagles tallied on three of four possessions to build a 53-40 advantage. Freshman guard Axel Rodriguez (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Paltz) and junior guard Travis Cox (Brooklyn, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) each whittled the deficit to single digits, but a 10-point surge by Brockport opened up a 20-point lead that wound up tipping the momentum in the visitors' favor for good.

Jaquish posted career-high totals in points (16) and rebounds (14), while DeAngelis also scored 16 points. Rodriguez matched a career high with 15 points, while senior guard/forward Jeremy Eisenman (New York, N.Y./NEST+m) and Cox netted 10 points apiece. Coming off the bench, junior guard Matt Bernhard (Voorheesville, N.Y./Voorheesville) dished out a career-high 13 assists.

For Brockport, Summers recorded a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds, while graduate student guard Tyler Collins drained 19 points. Senior guard Monte Stroman registered 18 points in 18 minutes coming off the bench, while sophomore guard Danny Ashley doled out six assists.
