Women's Volleyball Caps Off Husson Eagles Classic With Split

BANGOR, Maine – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team closed out action at the Husson Eagles Classic with a split on Saturday at William P. Newman Gymnasium, falling to Bates College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-23), before topping Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-12).
 
As a result of their efforts throughout the weekend, junior outside hitter Rachel Mennonna (Selden, N.Y./Newfield), junior setter Allyssa Rock (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) and junior middle blocker Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) were named to the Husson Eagles Classic All-Tournament First Team.

Plattsburgh State moves to 4-4 overall with the results and next competes at the Union Tournament from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14. Bates and Saint Joseph's move to 4-0 and 0-7, respectively.

The Cardinals were unable to match the offensive firepower of Bates in the first match of the day, as they hit .050 compared to the Bobcats' .370 hitting clip. Bates posted a 44-27 edge in digs, while both teams were even in service aces (10-10) and blocks (3-3).
 
Mennonna led the Cardinals' offense with eight kills and also landed four service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Ann Beauchamp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) reinforced Plattsburgh State's front-row defense with two block assists.
 
For Bates, junior outside hitter Olivia McCulloch and junior middle hitter Angel Echipue paced a balanced attack with seven kills each, while McCulloch added 11 digs to help the Bobcats' back-row defensive efforts.
 
Plattsburgh State 3, Saint Joseph's (Maine) 1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-12)

 
Plattsburgh State put together one of its most masterful offensive performances of the season to top Saint Joseph's, hitting .314 for the match on 48 kills and 10 errors in 121 total attempts. The Cardinals also held the upper hand in service aces (11-5) and blocks (9-7), while the Monks posted a slight 70-69 advantage in digs.
 
Senior outside hitter Megan Hyde (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) floored 12 kills and hit .440 for the match, while Beauchamp fashioned a .625 hitting percentage on six kills and one error in eight total attempts. Mennonna defended a career-high 24 digs, while freshman outside hitter/opposite Jenn Braun (Garrison, N.Y./Walter Panas) and Simmons each posted six total blocks (three solo, three assist).
 
For Saint Joseph's, sophomore outside hitter Olivia Kent had nine kills, while junior libero Madison Provencher collected 24 digs. Junior middle blocker Erin Olson led the Monks' front-row defense with five total blocks (two solo, three assist).
