Men’s Soccer Defeats Mount Saint Mary College 6-1 for First Win of 2019

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's soccer scored a season-high six goals to earn a 6-1 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in the consolation match of the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Field House Complex.
 
Plattsburgh State (1-3-0) got on the scoreboard first as freshman forward Alex Graci (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) scored in the 18th minute to make the score 1-0. Sophomore defender James Alexander (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) took a free kick from near midfield that landed in the 18-yard box. Senior midfielder Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) then played the ball over to Graci, who finished for his second goal of the season. Marchena assisted on the play.
 
Plattsburgh State's lead over Mount Saint Mary (2-3-0) remained 1-0 until the second half when the Cardinals would outscore the Knights 5-1 to make the final score 6-1. 
 
Freshmen Devin Lambe (Wappingers Falls, N.T./Beacon) tallied two goals – scoring in the 54th and 55th minutes, respectively, to extend the Cardinal lead to 3-0. Junior midfielder Cameron Richards (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) assisted on Lambe's first goal. Richards forced a turnover and dribbled towards the top of the 18-yard box, eluding defenders. He guided the ball over to Lambe, who one-timed a shot into the top-right corner of the net.
 
For his second goal, Lambe got the ball after a turnover and got behind the defense. He dribbled into the 18-yard box and finished into the lower-right corner. 
 
Mount Saint Mary fought back and Matthew Wyant scored a goal in the 61st minute to make the score 3-1. On a free kick from about 25 yards out, Wyant finished into the lower-left part of the net. 
 
Plattsburgh State would score the final three goals of the match to pull away for the 6-1 victory. Junior midfielder Yusif Okine (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) tallied his first collegiate goal and points to make the score 4-1 in the 72nd minute. Marchena took a free kick that was headed towards the lower-left side of the net. The goalkeeper made a diving stop, but Okine pounced on the rebound and scored, which Marchena assisting on the play.
 
Freshman forward Cole Weiner (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) tallied his third goal of the season in the 74th minute to push the Cardinal lead to 5-1. Weiner ran on to a ball that was played ahead by the Plattsburgh State defense. Mount Saint Mary's goalkeeper attempted to come out for the ball, but Weiner was first to it. Weiner dribbled around the goalkeeper and finished into the vacated net. 
 
The final Cardinal goal came in the 76th minute. On a Plattsburgh State corner kick, a Mount Saint Mary defender kicked the ball into their own net for an own goal that made the score 6-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
 
Ryan Wilson (1-3-0) started and played 78:32 to earn the victory for Plattsburgh State. Wilson limited the Knights to one goal. Senior goalkeeper James McGarrity made his first appearance as a Cardinal, playing 11:28 in relief of Wilson.
 
Tyler Rapp (2-3-0) started in goal and made six saves, while allowing five goals in 74:30. J.C. Varrasi made three saves and allowed one goal in 15:30, in relief of Rapp. 

Plattsburgh State next hosts The Sage Colleges at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, in a non-conference match at the Field House Complex.
