Box Score 2 BANGOR, Maine – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team won a pair of five-set matches to open up the Husson Eagles Classic on Friday evening at William P. Newman Gymnasium, defeating host Husson University, 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 14-25, 15-5), before downing Curry College, 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 11-25, 15-9).
Plattsburgh State rises to 3-3 overall with the wins and finishes out the event tomorrow against Bates College (10 a.m.) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine (12 p.m.). Husson and Curry fall to 1-4 and 1-1 overall, respectively, with the losses.
Plattsburgh State 3, Husson 2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 14-25, 15-5)
The Cardinals used its defense to grind out a five-set win over Husson in the first contest of the day. Plattsburgh State posted 10 total blocks and 79 digs during the course of the match.
Junior middle blocker
Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) posted career-highs in kills (15), hitting percentage (.875) and total blocks (11) to lead the Cardinals both offensively and defensively. Junior outside hitter
Rachel Mennonna (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) picked up a double-double with 11 kills and a career-high 19 digs, while junior setter/defensive specialist
Allyssa Rock (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) handed out 23 assists and served up two aces.
Plattsburgh State 3, Curry 2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 11-25, 15-9)
Plattsburgh State hit .197 (52-24-142) in the nightcap to edge host Curry in five sets.
Simmons led the offense with 16 kills and a .542 hitting percentage, and she also posted six total blocks (one solo, five assist). Senior outside hitter
Megan Hyde (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) and Mennonna each posted double-doubles, with Hyde flooring 14 kills and defending 17 digs and Mennonna registering 10 kills and 12 digs. Freshman outside hitter/opposite
Jenn Braun (Garrison, N.Y./Walter Panas) matched a season- and career-high in total blocks with seven, while senior setter/opposite
Brianna Coon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Rock combined for 43 assists.
