Vidal Scores First Cardinal Goal, but Men’s Soccer Drops Match to Hobart College 2-1

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Noel Vidal (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored his first goal in a Cardinal uniform, but Plattsburgh State men's soccer suffered a 2-1 setback to Hobart College in the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic on Friday afternoon at the Field House Complex.

Plattsburgh State (0-3-0) allowed two early goals that would prove to be the difference in the match. In the sixth minute, Hobart's (3-0-0) Nick Wigglesworth played the ball ahead from midfield all the way into the left side of the 18-yard box to Pete Critchlow. Critchlow one touched the ball across to the net to Liam Born, who finished for the goal in the sixth minute. Then in the seventh minute, August Martini took a free kick. Plattsburgh State's junior goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) made the initial save on the free kick, but was unable to hold onto the ball and Kyle Mangold kicked in the rebound to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Statesmen.

The score remained 2-0 until the second half when Plattsburgh State's offense created more opportunities. The offensive pressure paid off when Vidal scored in the 55th minute. On the right side of the offensive third of the field, freshman forward Alex Graci (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) passed the ball ahead to freshman forward Devin Lambe (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Beacon)/ Lambe took a couple dribbles to the right of the 18-yard box and slid the ball over to Vidal, who moved to his left in the 18-yard box and then took a left-footed strike that went into the left side of the net to make the score 2-1. Lambe and Graci each garnered their first collegiate assists on the play.

The Cardinals generated chances that could have tied the game as they outshout the Statesman 9-3 in the second half. However, Plattsburgh State was unable to notch the tying goal and the match ended with the score 2-1 in favor of Hobart.

Wilson (0-3-0) made three saves for the Cardinals and Brian Salazar (3-0-0) stopped five shots for the Statesmen.

Plattsburgh State faces Mount Saint Mary College in the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic consolation match at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Field House Complex. Following the Cardinals' match, Hobart College and William Paterson will meet in the championship match, scheduled for 2 p.m.
