Villemaire Records First Collegiate Hat Trick as Women’s Soccer Defeats Colby-Sawyer College 5-0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) recorded her first collegiate hat trick as Plattsburgh State women's soccer scored five second-half goals to defeat Colby-Sawyer College 5-0 in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at the Field House Complex.

Plattsburgh State (4-2-0) outshot Colby-Sawyer (2-5-0) 19-3 in the first half as the Cardinals applied offensive pressure on the Chargers. However, the match remained scoreless going into halftime.

Colby Sawyer had one of its best opportunities in the 46th minute of the match when the Chargers took a free kick from outside the top of the 18-yard box that hit the right post, as the match remained scoreless.

The Cardinals' offense kept generating chances and broke through with a goal in the 60th minute to make the score 1-0. Senior defenseman Sarah Bonner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) took a free kick from near midfield. Bonner played the ball into the 18-yard box, where sophomore forward Emily Frodyma (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) ran onto it and finished past the goalkeeper for what turned out to be Frodyma's first collegiate game-winning goal.

Villemaire scored the next three Cardinal goals to record her first collegiate hat trick and increase the Cardinal lead to 4-0. In the 77th minute, Bonner passed a free kick across into the 18-yard box that found Villemaire, who finished with a right-footed strike into the lower-right corner of the net. Then, in the 81st minute, Villemaire took a pass from Bonner and dribbled into the left side of the 18-yard box, where she finished with a high shot between the goalkeeper and the near post. Villemaire completed the hat trick in the 85th minute. She won a loose ball and fired a shot from about 25 yards out that arced over the leaping goalkeeper and into the net.

Freshman midfielder Claudia Fountain (Waterford, N.Y./Catholic Central) tallied her first collegiate goal and points in the 86th minute. From about 20 yards out, Fountain took a shot that deflected off of a Colby-Sawyer defender and into the back of the net. Villemaire assisted on the play to tally her seventh point of the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) made two saves as she improved to 4-2-0 on the season. Ennis earned her second collegiate shutout.

Sam Mitchell (2-5-0) stopped 15 shots in goal for the Chargers.

Villemaire set career highs in both goals and points for the Cardinals. Bonner's three assists were also a career best.

Plattsburgh State outshot Colby-Sawyer 33-5, including a 20-2 edge in shots on goal, in the match. The Cardinals also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Plattsburgh State begins State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at Fredonia on Friday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. Colby-Sawyer faces Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Norwich in a road match at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
