BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team wrapped up its 2019 season with a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) losses to The College at Brockport on Monday at the Clark V. Whited Softball Field. Brockport took game one, 9-8, on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh before prevailing, 14-0, in five innings in game two.
Senior left fielder/pitcher/catcher
Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) wrapped up her storied Plattsburgh State career with several all-time records, including four set following the Cardinals' doubleheader against Brockport. Groat eclipsed the program's career record in doubles with three two-baggers in game one, extending her career total to 51 to break the former mark of 49 set by Danielle Gjergji from 2007-10. Her three doubles also tied a single-game program record, matching sophomore third baseman
Bella Spadinger's (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) total from the Cardinals' April 6 contest against SUNY Potsdam that came in the back end of a doubleheader. Groat also became the program's all-time leader in total bases with 309, breaking the former standard of 308 set by Amy Woo from 2007-10, and officially wrapped up her career as the program's all-time leader in batting average (.420) and slugging percentage (.620). She also holds career program records in hits (209) and runs (144).
It marked the final games in a Cardinal uniform for seniors
Anna Fisher (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport),
Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall),
Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and Groat, who helped Plattsburgh State earn an 83-74 record and qualify for three SUNYAC Tournaments during their four years with the program.
Plattsburgh State finishes its season at 13-19 overall (7-11 SUNYAC) with the losses, while Brockport wraps up its year at 14-20 overall (5-13 SUNYAC) with the wins.
Game 1: Brockport 9, Plattsburgh State 8
Though the Cardinals tied the game with a four-run inning in the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the home half of the inning to earn a 9-8 win.
Freshman first baseman
Alex McKearin (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) smacked an RBI double to right field in the top of the first to put the Cardinals on the board before Brockport took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on the strength of an RBI single by junior center fielder Alexis Ross and a two-run home run by junior first baseman Jessica Koneski.
Plattsburgh State tied the game at 3-all in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles from Preiss and Groat, while junior left fielder Lexi Abernathy worked a bases-loaded walk in the third to stake Brockport to a 4-3 advantage.
McKearin brought the score back to even in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, but the Golden Eagles broke open an 8-4 lead in the sixth. Ross kicked off scoring in the inning with an RBI single to left, while Koneski singled to left two batters later to drive in Ross. Junior third baseman Alison Missavage drove in a pair of runs to hand Brockport the 8-4 advantage.
The Cardinals found an answer, though, relying on a four-run top of the seventh. The first run came across on an error by the left fielder, while freshman second baseman
Emily Nagle (Monroe, N.Y./Washingtonville) singled through the left side to draw Plattsburgh State within two. Spadinger came around to score on an errant throw by the pitcher trying to double her off after a hard lineout, while Groat tied the game with a one-out single to center field. Brockport induced a flyout to left and posted a strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, a Brockport batter struck out swinging to record the second out with runners on second and third, but junior right fielder Casey Danko drew a walk to load the bases. That set the stage for Koneski, who worked a walk to drive in the winning run.
Groat batted 4-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI in game one, while junior designated player
Haleigh Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawerence Central) and Spadinger both scattered three hits. For Brockport, Missavage led the way with a 4-for-4 performance that included two RBI, while Koneski drove in four runs in a 2-for-4 performance.
Freshman pitcher
Hannah Fuerst (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) was tagged with the loss for the Cardinals, while freshman pitcher Cheyenne Wilson earned the win for the Golden Eagles, limiting the Cardinals to two hits in an inning of scoreless relief.
Game 2: Brockport 14, Plattsburgh State 0 (5 inn.)
The Golden Eagles took advantage of 11 hits and six Cardinal errors to pull out a 14-0 win in five innings in the nightcap.
Brockport jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and continued to hit its offensive stride as the game wore on, plating one run in the second, four runs in the third and two runs in the fourth.
Fisher (2-for-2) and Agans (1-for-1) accounted for Plattsburgh State's three base knocks, while Danko, Koneski and senior designated player Morgan Flamholtz all had multiple hits for Brockport.
Plattsburgh State's Fuerst sustained the game-two loss, yielding five runs (two earned) in 1 1/3 innings of action. Wilson picked up the win in game two for Brockport, throwing a three-hit shutout.
