BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team fell to The College at Brockport, 7-2, in its regular-season finale Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at Bob Boozer Field.
Brockport finished with the upper hand in shots (32-28) and ground balls (30-25) while going 24-for-27 on clears. Plattsburgh State, which went 17-for-23 on clears, was 6-for-11 at the X. Neither team was able to score on its extra-man chances, with the Cardinals going 0-for-7 and the Golden Eagles going 0-for-3.
Plattsburgh State falls to 7-8 overall (4-2 SUNYAC) with the loss and hosts SUNY Geneseo in the semifinal round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Wednesday, May 1. Brockport finishes its season at 6-8 overall (1-5 SUNYAC).
Brockport accounted for the only scoring in the first quarter, with junior midfielder Corey Choberka and senior midfielder Billy Coppola tallying at 7:32 and 6:46, respectively. Sophomore attackman
Stephen Kane (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) put the Cardinals on the board with a goal at 10:10 of the second quarter before Coppola scored with 3:30 left in the stanza to hand Brockport a 3-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
Coppola cashed in on a Choberka pass at 8:39 of the third to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 4-1, while sophomore midfielder
James Sherwood (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) found the back of the net with 6:10 remaining in the period to cut the deficit in half. Sophomore midfielder Brendan Halleran scored unassisted with 1:10 remaining in the third to make it a 5-2 game.
Choberka and Coppola each scored in the fourth quarter to add insurance for Brockport's cause, while the Golden Eagles clamped down defensively and did not allow a goal in the final quarter of play.
Kane and Sherwood both scored for Plattsburgh State, while junior long-stick midfielder
Kyle Smith (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) caused two turnovers and scooped up six ground balls to lead the defense. Senior defenseman
Chris Rupp (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also finished with two caused turnovers. On face-offs, senior face-off specialist
David Force (Albany, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) went 2-for-3, while freshman face-off specialist
Daniel Umbro (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) went 4-for-8.
For Brockport, Coppola scored four goals to lead the attack, while Choberka tallied three points on two goals and an assist. Halleran also scored for the Golden Eagles. Defensively, sophomore midfielder Jahadi Prior caused four turnovers and collected two ground balls, while sophomore defensemen Joe Chiarmonte and CJ Parker each recorded three caused turnovers.

Joe Falco (Middletown, N.Y./Valley Central) made 10 saves in the loss for the Cardinals, while freshman goalie John Felice turned aside 12 shots in the win for the Golden Eagles.
