COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team salvaged a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader split with SUNY Oneonta on Friday at SUNY Cobleskill's Fighting Tiger Softball Park, defeating the Red Dragons, 10-3, in game two after suffering a 7-5 setback in game one.

Plattsburgh State moves to 11-13 overall (5-5 SUNYAC) with the results and next hosts SUNY Cortland in a doubleheader on Monday, April 22, at 1 p.m. Oneonta moves to 13-16-1 overall (8-6 SUNYAC) with the results and next visits Union College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 23, at 3:30 p.m.

Game 1: Oneonta 7, Plattsburgh State 5

Oneonta scored six runs in the first two innings, and while the Cardinals ultimately scored two runs in the seventh, the Red Dragons got out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs to pull out the win.

The Red Dragons scored twice in the bottom of the first, as senior designated player Lauren Sabatino drove in a run with an RBI double before eventually coming around to score on a wild pitch. Oneonta opened up a 6-0 lead in the second. Two runs came around to score on an error, senior catcher Selena Ruiz drove in a run with a single to center field and another run crossed due to an error.

Plattsburgh State battled back in the fourth with an RBI single by senior pitcher/left fielder Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and a two-run base knock by junior designated player Haleigh Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central), but Sabatino extended the Oneonta advantage to 7-3 with an RBI single to left in the home half of the fourth. In the seventh, senior shortstop Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) plated sophomore third baseman Bella Spadinger (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) with an RBI groundout before senior center fielder Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) scored freshman pinch hitter Hannah Fuerst (West Seneca, N.Y./Weset Seneca East) with an infield single.

Groat led the Cardinals with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring once and posting one RBI. For Oneonta, three Red Dragons scattered multiple hits, led by Sabatino (3-for-4, two RBI, one double, one run scored).

Groat drew the start in the circle and threw 3 1/3 innings before handing the reins over to freshman pitcher Elliana Bowlen (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley). Bowlen hurled 2 2/3 frames of scoreless relief, permitting just one hit. Junior pitcher Alyssa Bluethgen earned the game-one win for Oneonta, yielding five runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out four.

Game 2: Plattsburgh State 10, Oneonta 3

Spadinger blasted just the seventh grand slam in program history and recorded six RBI, tied for the second most in a single game in Plattsburgh State softball history, to lead Plattsburgh State to a 10-3 win in game two.

Groat kicked off scoring in the first with an RBI single to center field, while Spadinger and Fuerst both plated runs in the third. Spadinger drove in two with a double to right center before Fuerst made it a 4-0 game with an RBI single down the left-field line. Senior center fielder Dana Del Genio put Oneonta's first run on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI triple.

In the top of the fourth with the bases loaded, Spadinger turned around on a 3-1 pitch and sent it sailing over the left-field fence, marking the team's first grand slam since Amanda Tantillo achieved the feat last year on April 28, 2018, against Oneonta. Freshman third baseman/pitcher Madison Capozucca countered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, while the Cardinals added insurance with two runs in the seventh. Freshman first baseman Alex McKearin (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) drove in a run with a single down the right-field line before Preiss drove in the final run of the game with a single to center.

Spadinger led the Cardinal bats with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, tallying six RBI, three runs scored, a double and a home run. Preiss (2-for-4, one RBI, one run scored), Groat (2-for-3, two runs scored, one RBI, one double), Glashoff (2-for-4, two runs scored) and Fuerst (2-for-3, one RBI) also recorded multiple hits for Plattsburgh State.

Oneonta's offense was paced by Del Genio (2-for-4, one RBI, one triple), Koch (2-for-3, one run scored) and Capozucca (2-for-3, two RBI, one run scored, one home run).
