Groat Sets All-Time Runs Record in Softball's Split

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Senior pitcher/catcher Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) set the career program record in runs scored, as the Plattsburgh State softball team split on Friday in action at THE Spring Games. The Cardinals fell, 7-5, to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point before prevailing, 12-0, in five innings against the University of Minnesota Morris in the nightcap.

Groat tied Amy Woo's program record of 124 that Woo set from 2007-10 against Stevens Point before breaking the mark with three runs scored against Morris. She also recorded three hits across both contests to move into second in the program's career record book with 177, passing Brianna Clarke (176 hits from 2011-14). Woo holds the all-time hit record at 185.

Plattsburgh State moves to 5-7 overall with the results and closes out its Spring Break trip tomorrow with contests against Allegheny College (9:30 a.m.) and Hamilton College (11:45 a.m.). Stevens Point rises to 8-7 overall with the win, while Morris slips to 8-6 overall with the loss.

Stevens Point scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to push past Plattsburgh State in the Cardinals' first game of the day.

Groat and junior designated player Haleigh Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) each gave Plattsburgh State a 2-0 lead in the first, as Groat pushed across a run with an RBI double to right center before Agans doubled the advantage with a sacrifice fly. The Pointers cut the gap in half in the home half of the first, as freshman center fielder Maddie Candre plated a run on an RBI groundout. In the second, senior shortstop Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) drove in a run with a single up the middle before coming around to score on a throwing error during the ensuing at-bat to stake Plattsburgh State to a 4-1 lead.

Freshman first baseman Jordyn Hynst pulled the Pointers back within one with an RBI double to center field in the bottom of the second, while sophomore third baseman Bella Spadinger (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) used a single through the left side to push across sophomore left fielder Sydney Adolfo (Morrisonville, N.Y./Saranac) in the top of the fifth.

Stevens Point scored five straight runs to end the game, beginning with freshman catcher Sammy Buerger scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth. Buerger drove in a run with an infield single in the sixth before Candre cleared the bases with a three-run double later on in the inning.

Preiss, Groat and Agans all finished with two hits for the Cardinals, while Buerger, Candre, freshman third baseman Madi Greenaberg and freshman designated player Haley Barnes notched multiple hits for the Pointers. Candre drove in four runs, while Buerger scored three times.

Groat was tagged with the loss for Plattsburgh State, while sophomore pitcher Anna Palicka allowed just one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief to pick up the win for Stevens Point.

Plattsburgh State 12, Minnesota Morris 0 (5 inn.)

Agans tied the single-game program record in home runs with two, and drove in the second-most runs (6) in a single game in program history, as the Cardinals prevailed, 12-0, in five innings against Minnesota Morris.

It also marked the first collegiate shutout for freshman pitcher Elliana Bowlen (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley), who scatted just five hits while striking out four.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a five-run first. Preiss scored on an error, while Agans ripped a three-run home run to left center and Preiss, coming up to bat for the second time in the inning, drew a bases-loaded walk.

Agans hit a two-run homer in the second, while five runs came around to score in the third. After two runs came across on a dropped fly ball, Agans made it a 10-0 game with an RBI single up the middle. Spadinger and senior center fielder Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) each plated a run to spell the 12-0 final.

Agans ignited the Cardinal attack by going 3-for-4 with six RBI, three runs scored and two home runs, while five different Cougars notched a hit for Morris.

The Cougars used three pitchers in the setback, with freshman pitcher Mollie Dummer sustaining the loss.
