KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Senior left fielder
Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) hit a walk-off home run to help the Plattsburgh State softball team defeat D'Youville College, 4-3, at THE Spring Games Sunday morning before the Cardinals completed the sweep with a 14-2 victory over the College of Staten Island in five innings.
Senior shortstop
Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) scored her 100th career run during the Cardinals' win over Staten Island.
Plattsburgh State rises to 3-1 overall with the wins and takes on Calvin College (1:30 p.m.) and Tufts University (4 p.m.) tomorrow. D'Youville drops to 0-3 overall, while Staten Island slips to 0-8.
Plattsburgh State 4, D'Youville 3
Groat's heroics lifted the Cardinals to a 4-3 win over D'Youville in the first contest of the day.
D'Youville opened scoring on an RBI infield single in the first before freshman pitcher
Hannah Fuerst (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) tied the game with an RBI single to left field. Junior outfielder right fielder
Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) drove in two runs with a base hit to left field in the fifth before the Spartans received a two-run double from Sophomore pitcher Alexa Haberer in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-all. That set the stage for Groat, who led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run.
Groat batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a home run to pace the Cardinal attack, while junior first baseman Megan Meyer and Haberer each had two hits to lead the Spartans.
After Fuerst drew the start and threw four innings, freshman pitcher
Gabby Rodriguez (Albany, N.Y./Albany) came in and earned the win in relief. Haberer shouldered the loss for D'Youville, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out five.
Plattsburgh State 14, Staten Island 2 (5 inn.)
The Cardinals scattered 10 hits and took advantage of seven Dolphin miscues in a 14-2 victory in five innings over Staten Island.
Plattsburgh State hopped out to a 6-0 lead in the second and tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth. Staten Island made it an 8-1 game with a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Cardinals erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth. Despite scoring once in the bottom of the fifth, the game ultimately was called after the inning was over due to the run rule.
Preiss and senior center fielder
Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) each led the Cardinals offensively by going 3-for-3 at the plate. Preiss scored three times, while Glashoff scored twice and had four RBI. Groat drove in four runs as well.
For the Dolphins, four different student-athletes finished with two hits.
Freshman pitcher
Elliana Bowlen (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) earned her first collegiate win in the circle for Plattsburgh State, permitting two runs on 10 hits while striking out two. Staten Island used two pitchers in the loss.
