Men's Ice Hockey Holds Off Fredonia in 3-2 Road Win

College Hockey Stats Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team completed a western New York road sweep on Saturday evening at the Steele Hall Ice Arena, as the Cardinals edged Fredonia, 3-2, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

Senior forwards Cole Stallard (Atlanta, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) and Pat Egan (Rochester, N.Y./Lone Star Brahmas) each had a goal and an assist, while freshman defenseman Ian Wallgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Connecticut Oilers) earned two assists.

The Cardinals finished with a 50-19 edge in shots on goal, including a 30-3 margin in the first period. Plattsburgh State went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Fredonia was unable to capitalize on the lone man advantage it had on the evening.

Plattsburgh State rises to 10-11-2 overall (8-5-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts SUNY Cortland on Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. Fredonia falls to 12-7-4 overall (6-6-2 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits Morrisville State College on Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m.

Egan put the Cardinals on the board 4:17 into the first period. The Blue Devils tried to clear the zone, but Stallard grabbed the puck out of the air on the blue line to keep the Cardinals onside. He skated into the right circle and fed Egan across the ice in the left circle. Egan beat a diving Fredonia goalie blocker side to give Plattsburgh State the early 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals continued to pressure the Blue Devils offensively in the opening stanza, as they finished the period with a 30-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior goaltender Eric Bogart came up big, though, tallying 29 stops and keeping the deficit at just one goal heading into the first intermission.

At 14:22 of the second period, senior forward Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) scored on the power play to double the Plattsburgh State lead. Egan passed back to Wallgren on the right point, and Wallgren took a slap shot that was deflected in by Owens in the slot.

Fredonia cut the deficit in half nearly three minutes later, as senior forward Jimmy Morgan scored shorthanded. Junior forward Tyler Riter deflected a Plattsburgh State pass in the defensive zone forward and took control in the Cardinals' end. He centered a pass to Morgan, and Morgan one-timed a shot low glove side.

At 18:12 of the second period on the same power-play opportunity, the Cardinals finally cashed in, as Stallard netted the eventual game-winner. Wallgren passed D-to-D to freshman defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) on the left point, and Araujo fed Stallard in the left circle. Stallard used a wrist shot to score over the goaltender's right shoulder, which added insurance to Plattsburgh State's cause.

Fredonia drew back within one with 6:31 elapsed in the third, as Morgan scored his second goal of the game. Freshman forward Ethan Kirbis won a defensive-zone face-off, and junior defenseman Charlie Manley took control of the puck along the back wall in the Blue Devils' zone. Manley then sent a stretch pass ahead to Morgan, who got a breakaway opportunity. Morgan slid the puck underneath the goalie's pads to breathe life back in the Fredonia's cause.

The Blue Devils pulled their goalie with 1:52 left in regulation, and the Cardinals stood tall defensively, keeping Fredonia from netting the equalizer. Junior forward Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) laid out to block a Blue Devil shot with seconds left on the clock to seal the victory for Plattsburgh State.

Sophomore goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) backstopped the Cardinals to the win with a 17-save effort, while Bogart turned aside 47 shots in the loss for the Blue Devils.
