Baseball Splits With SUNY Maritime In Season Opener

YAPHANK, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team split with SUNY Maritime to open their season on Sunday at Baseball Heaven. 

GAME ONE: PLATTSBURGH 17, MARITIME 4
Senior Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) led the Cardinals with three hits, three run and three RBIs.

Senior Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) recorded two hits, two runs and three RBIs while junior Stephen Lydon (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Suffolk CC) had two hits, two runs and three RBIs.

Senior Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry), junior Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and junior Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan/Joto) all had two hits and two runs.

P. Bryant hit a homerun to right field in the first inning to plate Craft for a 2-0 lead.

Mori score in the second off a sacrifice fly from junior Mike Onufrak (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck).

The Cardinals scored four runs in the fourth.

Cipriano hit a triple to center field to plate Mori, Cipriano scored off a sacrifice fly from Onufrak, Craft hit a double to right center to score S. Bryant and senior Jordan Godfrey (Castleton, Vt./Rutland).

Plattsburgh State scored nine runs in the top of the fifth for a 16-0 lead.

Lydon hit a homerun to plate P. Bryant, sophomore Simon Alvarez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) scored off another sacrifice fly from Onufrak, Cipriano scored off single from S. Bryant, Godfrey scored off a single from Craft, S. Bryant scored off a single from P. Bryant, Craft scored off a double from Lydon and Lydon and P. Bryant scored off a double from Alvarez.

Maritime recorded four runs in the bottom of the fifth off a throwing error and two singles. 

Freshman Zachary Hemphill (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) scored the Cardinals final run in the top of the sixth for the 17-4 win.

P. Bryant picked up his first win of the season after pitching four innings, striking out two and allowing only one hit and no runs.

Senior PJ Weeks (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), freshmen Joe Mazzariello (Bronx, N.Y./Westlake) and junior Kyle Petruzzi (West Islip, N.Y./Suffolk CC) all pitched one inning.

Weeks struck out two and allowed three hits and four runs, while Mazzariello struck out one and allowed one hit and  Petruzzi had one hit.
 
GAME TWO: PLATTSBURGH 4, MARITIME 5

Mori scored the Cardinals first run in the top of the second off a single from Onufrak.

Lydon scored off a ground out and Alvarez scored off another single from Onufrak in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

Maritime recorded five runs in the fifth inning off a single, a double, a ground out and a two-run homer.

S. Bryant scored in the seventh off a single from Lydon but the Cardinals couldn't get another run and took the one-run loss.

Senior Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) pitched 4.2 innings, struck out four and gave up five hits and four runs.

Senior Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) (0-1) pitched .2 innings and gave up one hit and one run.

Frank Finkbeiner (Stone Ridge, N.Y./Rondout Valley) pitched .2 innings, struck out one and had one hit.

The Cardinals travel to Bard College on Saturday, March 2 for a doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m.
