NEW PALTZ, N.Y. –The No. 21 Plattsburgh State men's basketball team (20-5, 14-4 SUNYAC) picked up their 20th win of the season with an 80-73 victory over New Paltz (14-11, 9-9 SUNYAC) Saturday evening inside the Hawk Center.
Senior forward Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y. / Harborfields) picked up his 16th double-double of the season with 29 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior guard/forward Chris Middleton (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) recorded 21 points and six rebounds, junior guard Nick DeAngelis (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had 11 points and three blocks and sophomore guard Travis Cox (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Frederick Douglass Academy) had nine points.
Plattsburgh State out-shot New Paltz 42.9% to 38.9% and out-rebounded them 50-38.
The lead changed nine times in the first half and was tied eight times.
New Paltz was leading 7-3 at the 16:36 mark when Plattsburgh State went on an eight-point run for a five-point edge.
Middleton made a free throw, senior forward Ian Howard (Queens, N.Y./Springfield Gardens) had a layup, Patron had a layup and Howard had an old-fashioned three pointer.
The Hawks tied the game four times in four minutes and took an eight-point cushion with seven minutes remaining.
The Cardinals went on a nine-point run to take a one-point advantage.
Cox made a jumper, DeAngelis had a layup and a three-pointer and Middleton made two free throws.
The half was tied two more times and New Paltz took a one-point lead with 1:53 on the clock.
Cox put in a layup and DeAngelis drained a three to end the half to head into halftime up 42-38.
Plattsburgh State out-scored New Paltz 38-35 in the second half and took their largest lead of 10-points with 13:14 on the clock.
The Cardinals are the No. 2 seed heading into the SUNYAC tournament hosted by Oswego Feb. 22-23.
Their opponent will be determined after the first round games on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
