GENESEO, N.Y. — Fourth-seeded Plattsburgh State women's soccer was edged by top-seeded SUNY Geneseo 3-2 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament semifinal match on Wednesday at Geneseo's College Stadium.
With the defeat, Plattsburgh State is eliminated from the SUNYAC Tournament. The Cardinals, who finished the season with a 10-8-1, 4-4-1 SUNYAC record, reached the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals for the sixth consecutive season under head coach Tania Armellino. Geneseo (15-2-1), which is ranked No. 14 nationally, is set to host second-seeded SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC Tournament Championship match at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.
After neither team scored in the first 15 minutes of the match, Geneseo scored in the 16th minute and 19th minute for the only two goals of the first half to take a 2-0 lead over Plattsburgh State into halftime.
For their first goal of the match, the Knights forced a turnover on the Cardinals' side of midfield. Sarah Loprieno played a ball ahead into the right side of the 18-yard box where Domenica Piccoli ran onto it. Piccoli dribbled in on goal and finished from close range with a high shot over Plattsburgh State's goalkeeper to make the score 1-0 in the 16th minute.
Just over three minutes later, Ellie Gregory scored to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Knights. Hannah Sullivan passed the ball from the right side of the 18-yard box to the front of the net where Gregory fired a shot to the left of the Cardinal goalkeeper to make the score 2-0 in the 19th minute.
After halftime, Plattsburgh State struck quickly to make the score 2-1 in the 48th minute. Sophomore forward Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) played a ball ahead to sophomore forward Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) in the right side of the 18-yard box. Villemaire arced a shot over the goalkeeper for the goal.
Villemaire struck again with her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the 68th minute to tie the match at 2-2. Sophomore midfielder Erin Metzger (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) played a ball ahead to Villemaire, who got behind the defense and ran onto the ball. Villemaire dribbled into the 18-yard box where she finished with a shot into the lower-left portion of the net.
Piccoli responded for Geneseo to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Knights in the 71st minute. After a Geneseo corner kick, Picoli had an initial shot that was saved before kicking in her own rebound for the goal.
The Cardinals kept on fighting, but were unable to find an equalizer as they suffered the 3-2 defeat.
Freshman goalkeeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (9-8-1) made four saves for Plattsburgh State and Julia McDonald (15-2-1) stopped two shots for Geneseo.
Geneseo held an 11-8 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
