Quinn Scores a Career-High 21 Points in Women's Basketball's 76-61 Loss to Hamilton in Cardinal Classic Championship Game

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior guard Theresa Quinn (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor (4-of-7 from 3-point range), but the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell, 76-61, to Hamilton College in the Cardinal Classic championship game on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

For their efforts, Quinn and sophomore guard Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Hamilton's sophomore guard Kelcie Zarle was named the Tournament MVP, while Hamilton's senior guard Carly O'Hern and SUNY Poly's senior guard Taylor Aybar also were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Plattsburgh State slips to 2-3 overall with the loss and next visits SUNY Oneonta for its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener on Friday, Dec. 6, at 5:30 p.m. Hamilton rises to 4-0 overall with the win and next visits Nazareth College on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 5 p.m.

Hamilton jumped out to an early lead, with O'Hern nailing a 3-pointer to give the Continentals a 13-2 advantage with 6:22 left in the first quarter. Quinn converted on a jumper and hit a 3-pointer to trim the gap to 13-7, but Hamilton ballooned the advantage to 24-9 with 26 seconds left in the opening stanza after an old-fashioned 3-point play by junior forward Kayla Glemaud. Senior guard/forward Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) hit a free throw with four seconds left in the period to draw the Cardinals within 24-10.

Plattsburgh State kept Hamilton from breaking the game open in the second quarter and scored five unanswered points on a 3-pointer by Quinn and two free throws by sophomore guard Ly'rell Walker (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) to pull within 37-29. Hamilton's junior guard Scout Lansing made 1-of-2 free throws with 36 seconds left in the second to spell the halftime score of 38-29.

Doody and junior guard Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y./Keene Central) scored back-to-back layups to open the second half to make it a five-point game (38-33), and after the Continentals went on a seven-point tear to construct a 45-33 advantage, Plattsburgh State countered with six unanswered points, four of which came from Walker. Hamilton wound up cruising into the break between the third and fourth quarters with an 11-2 run, and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Glemaud staked the Continentals to a 61-44 lead.

While Plattsburgh State outscored Hamilton, 17-15, in the fourth quarter, the Continentals never allowed the Cardinals to pull within single digits. Quinn hit a pair of free throws to trim the deficit to 71-61, but Hamilton scored the final five points of the game to prevail by a 76-61 final.

The Cardinals shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the floor and 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from 3-point range, but the Continentals were 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor, which included a 40 percent (6-of-15) mark from distance. Hamilton held a 44-29 edge in rebounds.

Beyond Quinn's 21 points, Doody and Walker also reached double figures with 10 points each. Walker's total came in just 13 minutes of action off the bench. Durnin dished out seven assists and added six points, while senior forward Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) pulled down nine rebounds.

For Hamilton, five players reached double figures, three of whom came off the bench. Senior guard Mackenzie Aldridge netted 14 points, while Zarle scored 13. Sophomore forward/center Liz Arnold posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman forward Claire Sehring and Glemaud tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively.
