PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey used four unanswered goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat Bishop's University 4-1 in an exhibition game on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Bishop's was the aggressor early in the game, outshooting Plattsburgh State 10-7 in the first period and scoring the only goal of the stanza. The Gaiters' goal, which turned out to be their only tally of the night, was scored by Rachelle Perras at 11:19 of the first period when she fired a high wrist shot from just to the left of the right face-off dot. Marquerite Laffi and Miranda Snable assisted on the play.
Plattsburgh State gained momentum in the second period and outshot Bishop's 19-2 in the frame. The Cardinals tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) scored her first goal of the night at 11:07 of the second period. Junior forward and alternate captain Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) played a pass from the right side of the net across the front of the goal to Krauseneck, who banged in the puck. Katonka and freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) assisted on the play.
In the third period, the Cardinals outshot the Gaiters' 18-2 and scored three more times to make the final score 4-1 in favor of Plattsburgh State. Krauseneck tallied her second goal of the game, unassisted, on the power play at the 8:48 mark. She walked the puck out from behind the goal line to near the right face-off dot, before turning and firing a wrist shot that beat the goaltender on the near side to make the score 2-1.
Katonka then added a power-play goal at 13:06 of the third period to make Plattsburgh State's lead 3-1. Junior defender and captain Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) took a wrist shot from the right face-off dot that was kicked out by the goaltender. However, the puck ended up on Katonka's stick at the left side of the crease and she shot in the rebound for the goal. McArdle assisted on the play.
The score remained 3-1 until, with Bishop's goaltender pulled for an extra skater, junior forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) tallied an empty-net goal at 19:44.8 of the third period. Brush blocked a pass attempt by a Gaiter at the Cardinal's blue line. The puck bounced off of Brush and down the ice toward the Gaiters' goal. Brush caught up to the puck in the Cardinals' offensive zone and finished into the empty net to make the final score 4-1.
Freshman goaltender Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, Colo./Ontario Hockey Academy) made 13 saves in net for Plattsburgh State, while Hannah Pelletier stopped 40 shots for Bishop's.
Plattsburgh State held a 44-14 advantage in shots on goal, including a 37-4 edge in the final two periods.
The Cardinals went 2-of-7 on the power play and the Gaiters finished 0-of-2.
