SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team wrapped up its 2019 season with a pair of losses at the Skidmore Quad on Saturday, falling to Union College, 3-2 (25-11, 25-27, 19-25, 25-16, 15-8), before dropping a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-22) decision to Morrisville State College.
Junior middle blocker
Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) concluded the season with a .301 hitting percentage on 209 kills and 72 errors in 455 total attempts, breaking the single-season program record of .291 that was set by Jennifer Maziarz in 2003. Furthermore, she extended her career record in block assists with 208 and counting.
Junior setter
Allyssa Rock (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) tallied her 1,000th career assist during the Cardinals' match against Morrisville, and she finished the season with 1,002 to her credit through three seasons of action.
It marked the final collegiate match for seniors
Brianna Coon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and
Megan Hyde (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont), both of whom competed for the Cardinals for four seasons.
Plattsburgh State concludes its 2019 campaign at 8-20 overall. Union rises to 14-13 overall, while Morrisville climbs to 21-7 overall.
Union 3, Plattsburgh State 2 (25-11, 25-27, 19-25, 25-16, 15-8)
While the Cardinals won the second and third sets, Union came back to win the fourth, 25-16, before prevailing by a 15-8 score in the deciding fifth set.
Union hit .236 for the match, which included a .412 clip in the fifth, while Plattsburgh State overcame a negative hitting percentage in the first set to hit .092 for the contest. The Dutchwomen finished with a 7-4 edge in service aces and an 81-52 cushion in digs, while the Cardinals held a 5-4 advantage in blocks.
Simmons led the Cardinals with eight kills and four total blocks (two solo, two assist), while Hyde floored a team-high nine kills and had seven digs. Rock and Coon combined for 28 assists in a 6-2 offense, while junior libero
Abby Bone (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) defended 14 digs.
For Union, junior outside hitter/right side Julia Louis (15), junior outside hitter Lara Atalay (14), junior outside hitter Gillian Gore (13) and junior middle blocker Katie Moss (11) all had double figures in kills, while senior setter Maegan Teets and freshman setter Haley Kresch combined for 52 assists. Junior defensive specialist Kaylee Velasquez and Gore paced the back row defensively with 26 and 22 digs, respectively.
Morrisville 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-22)
While the Cardinals limited Morrisville to .175 hitting, they were unable to overcome the Mustangs despite playing them close for several stretches during the match.
Morrisville finished with the upper hand in service aces (8-5), while Plattsburgh State held the advantage in both blocks (8-4) and digs (48-36).
Hyde keyed the Cardinals' attack with eight kills, while Simmons hit .333 and registered five total blocks (two solo, three assist). Rock distributed 12 assists, while Bone (17), Coon (10) and Hyde (10) all finished with double figures in digs.
For Morrisville, senior outside hitter Megyan Merrill and senior outside hitter/right side Amelia Baratier recorded 19 and 11 kills, respectively, while freshman setter Siobhan Moore doled out 22 assists. Senior libero Samantha Wolf led the back row defensively with 19 digs.
