PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior forward
Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) scored twice to propel Plattsburgh State women's soccer to a 2-1 victory over The College at Brockport, as the Cardinals earned their first State University of New York Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday at the Field House Complex.
Plattsburgh State (5-4-1, 1-2-1 SUNYAC) was the aggressor in the first half, outshooting Brockport (6-5-1, 2-2-0 SUNYAC) 12-6 in the period. The Cardinals' offensive pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Matott scored her first goal of the match to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead. Sophomore forward
Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) dribbled the ball into the left side of the 18-yard box near the goal line and took a shot that was saved. However, the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper was unable to hold onto the rebound and Matott, who got to the rebound first, deposited the ball into the top of the net with a left-footed strike from the top of the six-yard box.
Brockport would tie the match at 1-1 in the 34th minute. Marissa Greiner dribbled past a couple of Cardinals and into the 18-yard box, where she finished into the lower-left corner with a right-footed strike for her second goal of the season.
Each goalkeeper made key saves to close out the first half and in the second half, as the match remained tied at 1-1 until the 85th minute when Matott scored her second goal of the afternoon.
Junior midfielder
Abigail Seamans (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton Central) dribbled the ball into the Cardinals' attacking third, before playing a pass ahead to sophomore forward
Emily Frodyma (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) just outside the top right of the 18-yard box. Frodyma took a couple of steps forward and played a pass into the 18-yard box that deflected off of a Golden Eagle defender and to the feet of Matott. Matott took a couple of steps forward and fired a rising shot over Brockport's sliding goalkeeper into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
The Golden Eagles attempted to find an equalizer, but the Cardinal defense and freshman goalkeeper
Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (5-4-1) preserved the 2-1 victory for Plattsburgh State.
Ennis made five saves for Plattsburgh State and Kayla Usborne (3-2-1) stopped 10 shots for Brockport.
Plattsburgh State held a 17-11 edge in shots, including a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Each team had two corner kicks.
Matott's multi-goal game is her first of the season and the second of her collegiate career. She also scored two goals in a 4-2 win over Castleton on Aug. 31, 2018. She now has three goals and three assists for nine points this season. With her assist on Matott's first goal, Villemaire increased her team-leading point total to 17, which equals her point total from the entire 2018 season.
