PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's hockey defeated the Ottawa Jr. Lady 67's 8-1 in exhibition play on Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State put 13 shots on goal compared to the Ottawa Lady 67's six in the first period, but neither team scored.
In the second period, the Cardinals outshot the Jr. Lady 67's 22-4 and outscored them 3-1 to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
Sophomore forward
Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) scored her first of two goals on the afternoon at 1:05 of the period. Junior forward
Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) circled out of the left corner in the offensive zone and passed the puck across the front of the net to
Taylor Whitney, who put a shot on goal. Krauseneck banged home the rebound for the goal.
Krauseneck would strike again for what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 9:37 of the second period. On the power play, sophomore defenseman
Hanna Rose (Chaumont, N.Y./Northwood School) played the puck from the left point down to Whitney near just below the right face-off dot. Whitney took a shot that was saved, but Krauseneck scored on the rebound to make the score 2-0.
Freshman forward
Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) made the score 3-0 with a goal at 12:15 of the second period. Katonka skated into the left side of the offensive zone and played a pass across to Boric by the right circle. After receiving the pass, Boric took a wrist shot that beat the goaltender. Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) also assisted on the play.
The Ottawa Lady 67's scored their lone goal of the game on the power play at 1:35 of the second period to make the score 3-1. Claire Sedgewick intercepted a pass in Plattsburgh State's defensive end, skated in on net and snapped off a quick wrist shot into the upper-left corner of the goal for an unassisted tally.
The Cardinals pulled away in the third period as they outscored the Jr. Lady 67's 5-0 to make the final score 8-1 in favor of Plattsburgh State.
At 1:01 of the third period,
Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) scored on a slap shot from the top of the right circle that found its way through the goaltender to make the score 4-1. Whitney and Boric assisted on the play.
Plattsburgh State made the score 5-1 at 4:44 of the third period when Junior defenseman
Maggie Blair (Wallace, N.C./University of Maine) skated into the right side of the offensive zone and played a pass across to freshman forward
Tatem Cheney (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Lady 67's) who was driving to the net. Cheney redirected Blair's pass over the right leg of the goaltender for the goal. Senior forward
Jen Manning (Marlborough, Mass./Massachusetts Spitfires) also assisted on the play.
The Cardinal lead grew to 6-1 when Whitney scored at the 10:27 mark. McArdle passed the puck out of the defensive zone to Whitney in the neutral zone. Whitney skated into the offensive zone and scored through the goaltender's five-hole on a wrist shot.
Junior forward
Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) made the score 7-1 when she scored at 11:55 of the period. Walker took a pass from junior defenseman
Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) and fired a wrist shot from the left side of the slot that beat a shifting goaltender to the near side. Sophomore forward
Holly Schmelzer (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagra Jr. Purple Eagles) tallied the secondary assist.
The final goal of the night that made the score 8-1 was scored by
Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) and assisted by
Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) at 12:05 of the third period. Benjamin skated into the right side of the offensive zone and fed a pass to Unsworth. Unsworth used a deke to fake out the goaltender and score the goal.
Sophomore
Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School), freshman
Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, Colo./Ontario Hockey Academy) and freshman
Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif/Anaheim Lady Ducks) each saw time in goal for the Cardinals. Davis started and made six saves without allowing a goal in one period of play. Beaubien, the goalie of record, made three saves and allowed on goal as she played the second period. In the third period, Nease stopped all six shots she faced.
Tove Jacobson started in goal for the Jr. Lady 67's. Jacobsen, who split time in net with Lauren Griffin, made 38 saves in the game and allowed two goals. Griffin surrendered six goals and made 10 saves.
Whitney led all players with four points on one goal and three assists, while Krauseneck led all goal scorers with two goals.
Plattsburgh State outshot the Ottawa Jr. Lady 67's 56-16 in shots on goal.
Plattsburgh State begins its regular season with a two-game Northeast Women's Hockey League series at Buffalo State on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2. Puck drop is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on both days.
