PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior midfielder
Abigail Seamans (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton Central) scored an equalizing goal in the 66th minute only to have SUNY Oneonta respond with the game-winner 4:37 later, as the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team fell to the Red Dragons, 3-2, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Senior Day Saturday at the Field House Complex.
Down 2-1, Seamans scored a crucial goal in the 66th minute. Sophomore forward
Kirsten Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) drove past two Red Dragon defenders on the right side of the 18-yard box and fired a shot that was saved, but Seamans booted in the rebound to record her second goal of the season.
Oneonta countered in the 70th minute on freshman midfielder/forward Joie Tottorice's second goal of the afternoon. Senior midfielder/forward Christina Kornfeld dribbled down the left wing and crossed a pass to Tottorice, who blasted a shot from inside the six-yard box into the back of the net. That goal wound up being the difference, as the Red Dragons won at the Field House Complex for the first time since 2015.
Prior to the start of the match, the Cardinals honored their eight seniors:
Sarah Bonner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown),
Rachael Moran (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington),
Alex Benjamin (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland),
Amanda Steinman (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst),
Vina Nguyen (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union),
Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton),
Tina Bedard (Morrisonville, N.Y./Saranac) and team manager
Genevieve DeFrancesco (Coxsackie, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens).
Plattsburgh State drops to 8-7-1 overall (4-4-1 SUNYAC) with the loss. Despite the setback, the Cardinals secured the No. 4 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded SUNY Potsdam in the tournament's first round on Saturday, Nov. 2. Prior to that contest, however, the Cardinals will close out their regular season by hosting SUNY Canton on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. Oneonta secured a SUNYAC Tournament berth with the win, locking up the No. 6 seed while rising to 6-8-3 overall (4-5-0 SUNYAC). The Red Dragons, who close out their regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at home against Wilkes University, will visit third-seeded The College at Brockport in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Sophomore forward
Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) fired the opening salvo just 4:38 into the match. Seidman took control of the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and was challenged by the Oneonta goalkeeper. Seidman dribbled around the keeper to the right and deposited the ball into the back of the vacant net for her fourth goal of the season.
Oneonta countered less than two minutes later. Freshman midfielder/forward Hannah Kelly crossed the ball in from the right outside edge of the 18-yard box to Tottorice, who one-touched a shot from around 10 yards out that the Cardinal goalkeeper got a hold of with a diving save attempt. The ball had too much pace, however, and it ricocheted off her hands and into the left side of the goal.
In the 27th minute, Oneonta made it a 2-1 score. Off a corner kick, Kornfeld took advantage of chaos in front of the goal, finding the back of the net on a feed from sophomore forward Sienna Nicolich. The Red Dragons retained that 2-1 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
Plattsburgh State finished with the upper hand in both shots (19-13) and corner kicks (4-2).
Freshman goalkeeper
Julia Ennis (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) made four saves in the loss, dropping to 7-7-1 for the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Claire Lepper (5-8-3) turned aside eight shots in the victory for Oneonta.
