College Hockey Stats Box Score
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior forward
Pat Egan (Rochester, N.Y./Lone Star Brahmas) scored in regulation and buried the shootout winner, as the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team captured the W.B. Mason Winter Classic title after tying Saint Anselm College, 1-1, in overtime and winning the shootout, 1-0, in four rounds during the championship game Saturday evening at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
After three-and-a-half rounds of neither team scoring in the shootout, Egan produced the championship-clinching shootout goal. He drove straight into the zone and uncorked a shot from the slot that beat the goalie glove side. With the Cardinals shooting last, Egan's goal ended the shootout.
As a result of his heroics in the championship game, which included a goal 55 seconds into the contest, Egan was named the Tournament MVP. Senior forward
Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara University) and junior defenseman
Charles Barber (Queensbury, N.Y./New York Bobcats) from Plattsburgh State, junior forward Mike Ferraro from Saint Anselm, junior goaltender Avery Gobbo from Connecticut College and senior forward Matt Lippa from Manhattanville College joined Egan on the All-Tournament Team.
Plattsburgh State, which won its 22nd Winter Classic title in program history, moves to 6-5-2 with the tie, while Saint Anselm moves to 8-8-1 with the result. In the consolation game, Connecticut College edged Manhattanville, 1-0.
Egan fired the opening salvo just 55 seconds after the opening puck drop. Senior forward
Cole Stallard (Atlanta, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) played the puck up to freshman defenseman
Ian Wallgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Connecticut Oilers) on the right point, and Wallgren fired a shot that Saint Anselm's goaltender, senior Colin Soucy, turned away. Egan then banged in the rebound right outside the crease to hand the Cardinals the early lead.
Saint Anselm knotted the score at 1-all with 14:00 gone in the first. Junior defenseman Jake Grade passed D-to-D to junior defenseman Liam O'Sullivan, and O'Sullivan took a shot from the left point that Ferraro redirected into the goal.
After a mostly uneventful second period, Plattsburgh State's chances of salvaging the tie took a hit after it sustained a five-minute major with just 1:28 left in regulation. The Cardinal penalty kill once again came up big, as a pad save by sophomore goaltender
Lawson Fenton (Medina, N.Y./Coquitlam Express) and a blocked shot by senior forward
Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) helped Plattsburgh State make it through regulation.
With the penalty carrying into overtime, Fenton sprang into action two more times and Cardinal defenders blocked four more Hawk shot attempts before Saint Anselm took a roughing minor to end the power-play opportunity for the Hawks. Plattsburgh State was unable to put a shot on frame during its one-minute power play after the five-minute major ended, and neither team was able to generate an offensive chance in the final 28 seconds of overtime.
Saint Anselm finished with a 36-33 edge in shots on goal, while both teams were scoreless on the power play. The Hawks were 0-for-4 with the extra skater, while the Cardinals were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Fenton made 35 saves in 65:00 of work for the Cardinals, moving his save percentage for the weekend to .957 and his goals-against average to 1.44. Soucy turned aside 32 shots in 65:00 of action for the Hawks.
