POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior forward
Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y. / Harborfields) broke the Plattsburgh State men's basketball career points record in the Cardinals 77-75 overtime win against Potsdam Tuesday night inside the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
Patron had 1728 points coming into the game and broke the old record of 1734 set by Anthony Williams (2004-08) in the eighth minute with his seventh point.
He went on to record 20 points for a new record of 1748 and had 15 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season.
Senior guard
Brandon Johnson (Greenburgh, N.Y./Woodlands) led the Cardinals with 23 points and six steals while senior guard/forward
Chris Middleton (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) recorded nine points and four steals and senior forward
Ian Howard (Queens, N.Y./Springfield Gardens) picked up a team high of ten rebounds.
The first half was tied three times before the Cardinals went on a nine-point run.
Patron made a layup, Johnson had a layup, Patron made another and Johnson drained a three-pointer.
Potsdam cut the lead to four points and sophomore guard
Travis Cox (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Frederick Douglass Academy) put in a layup followed by another three-pointer and layup from Johnson for an 11-point cushion.
The Bears made two free throws and Middleton drained a three followed by a layup from Johnson for a 14-point edge with five minutes left.
Potsdam finished the half with two layups to cut the Cardinals lead to nine points and headed into halftime with a score of 40-31.
The Bears out-scored Plattsburgh State 37-28 in the second half and tied the game 68-68 with one second left to force the game into overtime.
Overtime was tied twice and the lead changed six times before Plattsburgh State took and kept it for the win.
Johnson's two free throws tied the game 73-73 and took a one-point edge with 2:16 left.
A free throw from Middleton and two from Cox put Plattsburgh State up by four points.
Potsdam was able to make a layup with five seconds left but the Cardinals prevailed for the two-point victory.
The Cardinals are back on the road Friday to play Buffalo State with a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
