College Hockey Stats Box Score

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) made 29 saves, but the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team was unable to overcome No. 8/10 Norwich University in a 3-0 non-conference loss on Tuesday evening at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Norwich is ranked at No. 8 in the D3hockey.com Men's Top-15 Poll and No. 10 in the USCHO.com Men's Division III Top-15 Poll.

Freshman forward Brett Ouderkirk led Norwich with the game-winning goal in addition to an assist on the Cadets' second tally of the evening. Senior defenseman David Robertson also had a goal and an assist, while sophomore forward Coby Downs had two assists.

The Cadets finished with a 32-23 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-5 on the power play. Plattsburgh State was 0-for-2 with the extra attacker.

Plattsburgh State falls to 8-10-2 overall with the loss and next hosts SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. Norwich rises to 14-4-3 overall with the win and extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games. The Cadets next visit Suffolk University on Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m.

The Cardinals' best chances in the first period came with just more than four minutes remaining in the stanza, as senior forward Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara University) and sophomore forward Greg Malafronte (Colts Neck, N.J./New Jersey Titans) each took high-percentage shots that were turned aside by Norwich's junior goaltender Tom Aubrun. Plattsburgh State killed off a double minor in the first period and entered the locker rooms with a slight 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Norwich finally got on the board at 15:31 of the second period, scoring on the power play. Freshman defenseman Gabriel Chicoine sent a pass from the blue line down to Downs at the top of the right circle, and Downs centered a pass to Ouderkirk in the high slot. Ouderkirk then one-timed a shot low stick side to hand the Cadets the lead.

Robertson scored an important insurance goal with 16:26 gone in the third. Ouderkirk intercepted a pass in the Cardinals' zone and centered a pass to Downs. Downs took a shot that was blocked by junior defenseman Philip Middleton (Vail, Colo./Salmon Arm Silverbacks), and he collected the rebound before dropping a pass back to Robertson on the right point. Robertson ended up scoring blocker side to hand Norwich a 2-0 lead.

Freshman forward Maxime Borduas scored an empty-net goal to put the game on ice with 29.2 seconds left in regulation, relying on assists from sophomore forward Félix Brassard and Robertson.

Aubrun backstopped Norwich with 23 saves in the shutout.
