Men's Ice Hockey Falls to Canton, 3-1, on the Road

College Hockey Stats Box Score

CANTON, N.Y. – Despite finishing with a 33-22 edge in shots on goal and owning the territorial advantage in its offensive zone for long stretches of the second period, the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team fell to non-conference SUNY Canton, 3-1, at Roos House on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams were unable to convert on the power play, with the Cardinals going 0-for-6 and the Kangaroos going 0-for-2.

Sophomore forward Jake Mayette led Canton with three points, scoring the game-winning goal while assisting on the Kangaroos' other two markers.

Plattsburgh State drops to 7-8-2 overall with the loss and next visits No. 2/2 SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. The Cardinals handed the Knights their lone setback so far this season back on Nov. 9. Canton rises to 8-8-2 overall with the win and next visits Bryn Athyn College on Friday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m.

Canton got on the board 3:26 into the first period, as Mayette forced a turnover in the Cardinals' zone, and freshman forward Adam Petric scored on a wrist shot from inside the right face-off circle.

The Kangaroos stretched the advantage to 2-0 at 6:44 of the second period. Junior forward Tyson Bruce forced a neutral-zone turnover, while senior forward Zach Pease sent a short pass to Mayette. Mayette then wristed a shot from the left circle that beat the goaltender glove side.

Junior forward Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) helped cut the deficit in half with 8:36 gone in the second period. Senior forward Jesse Neher (Calgary, Alberta/Cowichen Valley Capitals) played the puck to senior forward Ross Sloan (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades) behind the goal line from along the right corner boards, and Sloan passed to Drabin out in front. Drabin then one-timed a shot from the low slot five-hole to score his second goal of the season.

Senior forward Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) nearly tied the game at 16:06 of the second period, as he had a breakaway chance with just the goalie to beat. Canton's junior goaltender Michael Cerasuolo denied the chance with a pad save and kept the Kangaroos out in front.

Bruce added a big insurance goal for Canton 10:13 into the third period. Pease sent a cross-ice pass to Mayette, and Bruce ended up scoring on a one-timer low stick side.

Plattsburgh State pulled its goalie with 2:20 remaining in regulation but was unable to score with the extra attacker, and Canton held on for the win.

Sophomore goaltender Lawson Fenton (Medina, N.Y./Coquitlam Express) sustained the loss in goal for the Cardinals, making eight saves while allowing two goals in 26:44 of work. Sophomore goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) took over early in the second period and turned aside 11 shots in 30:56 of action before vacating the net in favor of the extra skater late in the third period. Cerasuolo made 32 saves in the win for the Kangaroos.
