NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Despite receiving a single-game program record 47 saves from junior goaltender
Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite), the No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team lost, 5-4, in overtime to No. 6/7 Hamline University in the NCAA Division III Tournament third-place game Saturday afternoon at Norwich University's Kreitzberg Arena.

Sydney Aveson set the former single-game save record of 44 on Jan. 28, 2012, against Elmira College. Senior goaltender
Brooke Wolejko (South Windsor, Conn./St. Lawrence University) stopped 43 shots in Friday's semifinal-round double-overtime loss to Elmira, which now stands as the third-highest single-game save total in program history.
Senior forwards
Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) and
Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Millbrook School) each contributed offensively in their final game wearing the Cardinal sweater. Meneghin finished with a goal to lock in her career point total to 188, while Sheeran had a goal and an assist to finish her career at 186 points. The two wound up ranking fourth and fifth, respectively, in NCAA Division III history in career points, and they are the only teammates to appear in the top 10.
The Cardinals crawled out of a 3-1 hole from the first period, as freshman forward
Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Pens Elite) and Sheeran scored in the second to make it a 3-3 game heading into the final regulation period. While Katonka netted her second goal of the game 9:32 into the third to give Plattsburgh State its first lead at 4-3, Hamline's junior forward Becca Zarembinski scored with 4:44 left in regulation to tie the game.
Senior forward Darby Dodds netted the overtime game-winner with 6.2 seconds left on the clock to hand the Pipers the victory.
Plattsburgh State ends its season at 24-4-2 overall, while Hamline finishes at 22-5-3. The Cardinals qualified for their seventh straight NCAA Tournament semifinal, while the Pipers made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
Sophomore defenseman Sadie Baker put Hamline on the board 5:03 into the contest. Freshman forward Olivia Arkell played the puck up from the neutral zone, and freshman forward Madison Gaffney took a shot that was saved before Baker knocked in the rebound.
With 9:47 gone in the first, Zarembinski staked the Pipers to a 2-0 lead, as junior forward Leah Schwartzman won an offensive-zone face-off and got the puck immediately to Zarembinski, who scored from the top of the right circle.
Just 20 seconds later, Meneghin closed the deficit to 2-1. Junior forward
Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) centered a pass from the bottom of the left face-off circle, and Meneghin scored low glove side.
Sophomore forward Bre Simon stretched the Piper advantage to 3-1 with 4:52 left in the first period with her 31st goal of the season. After Simon was denied by Abbott on a breakaway chance, an offensive-zone face-off ensued for Hamline. Senior forward Sarah Bobrowski won the draw and got the puck back to sophomore defenseman Zoey Lobejko. Lobejko took a shot from the high slot that was saved, while Dodds got her blade on the puck before Simon finished on the doorstep.
Katonka scored on the power play with 13:10 gone in the second period to make it a 3-2 game. Junior forward
Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) passed to Millen at the bottom of the left face-off circle, and Millen crossed the slot with a pass to Katonka, who chipped a shot in top shelf glove side.
With 20.2 seconds left in the second period, Sheeran tied the game with a goal on a breakaway. Junior defenseman
Maci Hoskins (Oklahoma City, Okla./Northwood School) played the puck forward to freshman forward
Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) from along the end boards in the Cardinals' defensive zone, and Brush fed Sheeran on the rush. Sheeran shook off a Piper defender in the Plattsburgh State offensive zone by going five-hole on her and regained possession in the slot. Sheeran then scored low glove side to tie the game.
Katonka scored 9:32 into the third period to hand the Cardinals their first lead of the contest. Katonka dug the puck out of the left corner in the Cardinals' defensive zone, and she passed to Sheeran to create a transition opportunity. Sheeran passed to Katonka on the rush in the slot, and Katonka took a shot that was saved before burying the rebound at point-blank range.
Hamline tied the game at 4-all with 4:44 remaining, as Zarembinski buried her second goal of the game. Schwartzman played the puck into the offensive zone from the red line to freshman forward Madison Kolbow, and Kolbow fed Zarembinski in the slot. Zarembinski ripped a shot that deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the goal.
Following a Hamline timeout in the Pipers' offensive zone with 25.4 seconds to go in overtime, Hamline won the draw. After setting up shop with a shot and D-to-D passing, Bobrowski passed back to sophomore defenseman Dani Perry on the right point. Perry took a shot that was saved before Dodds fired in the rebound.
The Pipers finished with a 52-34 edge in shots on goal, while Plattsburgh State went 1-for-4 on the power play. Hamline went 0-for-1 with the extra attacker.
Abbott's counterpart, freshman goaltender McKenna Hulslander, made 30 saves in the win for Hamline.
