Softball Loses to Rowan, Defeats Beloit on Penultimate Day of Sunkissed Games Action

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State softball team split a pair of games on Friday at the Sunkissed Games, falling to Rowan University, 9-1, in five innings before topping Beloit College, 10-2, in five innings.
 
Plattsburgh State moves to 4-8 overall with the results and faces Skidmore College (9 a.m.) and Salve Regina University (11:15 a.m.) tomorrow to close out its spring break trip. Rowan rises to 12-3 overall with the win, while Beloit slips to 2-10 overall with the loss.
 
Rowan 9, Plattsburgh State 1 (5 inn.)
 
Rowan's five-run second inning helped the Profs seize a 9-1 victory in five innings in the Cardinals' first game of the day.
 
Senior designated player Amanda Tantillo (Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward) put Plattsburgh State on the board in the top of the second, driving in junior pinch runner Jennifer Sarcone (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) with an RBI single.
 
Rowan countered with its five-run outburst in the home half of the inning, as freshman pinch hitter KadyMae Makos plated two on an RBI single, junior center fielder Kristina Mueller drove in a run on a bunt single, junior shortstop Carly Anderson pushed a run across on a squeeze bunt and senior right fielder Morgan Smith plated a run on a groundout.
 
Freshman second baseman Sonia Sharma added to the Prof lead with an RBI base hit in the third, while sophomore pitcher Jesse DeDomenico and freshman designated player Christina Guarino spelled the final score with three combined RBI in the fourth.
 
Four Cardinals posted hits, while DeDomenico had the lone multi-hit outing for Rowan.
 
Sophomore pitcher Rhea Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) was tagged with the loss before senior pitcher Taylor Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) threw three innings of relief. DeDomenico earned the win for Rowan, yielding one unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
 
Plattsburgh State 10, Beloit 2 (5 inn.)
 
Plattsburgh State got back in the win column against Beloit, scattering 12 hits in a 10-2 Cardinal victory in five innings.
 
Junior first baseman Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) put Plattsburgh State on the board with an RBI double to right center in the bottom of the first, while the Cardinal bats came alive in the fourth, pounding out seven hits and scoring eight runs. Tantillo started the surge with an RBI single to center field, while senior left fielder Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) pushed across two more on a single to right field. Junior catcher Anna Fisher (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) tripled in a run before junior third baseman Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) brought her home during the ensuing at-bat. Freshman designated player Sydney Adolfo (Morrisonville, N.Y./Saranac) hit a bases-clearing double later on in the inning to hand the Cardinals a commanding 9-0 lead.
 
Freshman pinch hitter Josie Guernsey put Beloit on the board with a two-run single in the top of the fifth, while Groat hit a walk-off RBI single with no outs in the home half of the inning to enact the run rule.
 
Groat batted 3-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored and a double to key the Cardinal attack, while senior center fielder Dominique Zummo (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Glashoff each went 2-for-3. Three different hitters accounted for Beloit's three hits.
 
Senior Katie Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) earned the win in the circle for the Cardinals, allowing two runs on three hits and seven walks while striking out six. Junior pitcher Alyssa Boltik suffered the loss for the Buccaneers.
