Softball Swept by WashU, Utica at Sunkissed Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State was edged twice at the Sunkissed Games on Tuesday, dropping a 4-3 decision to Washington University in St. Louis before falling, 10-8, to Utica College.

Senior right fielder Amanda Tantillo (Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward) notched her 100th career hit against Utica, becoming the fourth current Cardinal to join the 100-hit club.

Plattsburgh State drops to 3-5 overall with the losses and returns to action on Thursday, March 15, as it takes on William Paterson University (11:15 a.m.) and Wisconsin Lutheran College (1:30 p.m.). WashU rises to 3-4 overall with the win, while Utica climbs to 3-3 overall with the victory.

Washington (Mo.) 4, Plattsburgh State 3

A two-run fifth inning by WashU was all the difference, as the Bears received a two-run double from senior designated player Hera Tang to take a 4-3 lead that would hold up through the final inning and a half.

WashU got on the board in the bottom of the first on a throwing error, while Plattsburgh State countered with two runs in the top of the second. Junior third baseman Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) drove in a run before senior left fielder Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) scored on an error the ensuing at-bat.

Tantillo handed the Cardinals a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, as she plated junior catcher Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) with an RBI single to left field. The Bears drew within a run in the home half of the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder Natasha Ramakrishnan.

Groat keyed the Plattsburgh State bats with a 4-for-4 outing at the plate, hitting a triple and scoring once. Sophomore center fielder Amy Walsh was the lone Bear to post multiple hits.

Senior pitcher Katie Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) shouldered the loss for the Cardinals, yielding four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three. Senior pitcher Anna McKee earned the win for the Bears, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Utica 10, Plattsburgh State 8

Utica prevailed in an offensive showcase in the nightcap, as the two teams combined for 24 hits in a 10-8 triumph for the Pioneers.

Utica jumped out to an early lead, using a three-run home run by senior pitcher/designated player Sabrina Stransky to take a 3-0 cushion in the top of the first. Freshman second baseman Shannon Myles (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) put Plattsburgh State on the board in the home half of the first, driving in junior shortstop Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) with a squeeze bunt.

The Pioneers seized a commanding 9-1 lead in the second following a six-run inning, which was capped off by a two-run homer by junior left fielder Hayley Fredericks. Torres hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to trim the gap to 9-4, and the Cardinals made it a 9-7 game with a three-run fourth. Senior designated player/pitcher Taylor Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) drove in two runs with a single, while senior center fielder Dominique Zummo (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) plated Smith during the ensuing at-bat.

Senior first baseman Samantha Whitehouse added insurance for the Pioneers with an RBI double in the fifth, while Groat scored on an error in the sixth for the Cardinals to spell the final score of 10-8.

Preiss' 3-for-5 effort that included two runs scored and a triple led the Cardinal bats, while Whitehouse batted 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI to lead the Pioneers.

Sophomore pitcher Rhea Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) took the loss for Plattsburgh State, while Smith pitched masterfully in 5 1/3 innings of relief, yielding one unearned run on six hits while striking out six. Stransky earned the win in the circle for Utica, while freshman pitcher Gabby Caccamo was credited with a save.
