CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team will need to wait until the final game of the regular season to figure out its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoff fate, as the Cardinals skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with SUNY Cortland on Friday evening in conference action at Alumni Arena.
SUNY Potsdam pulled off a 1-0 upset win over No. 3/4 Oswego State Friday evening to clinch a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament, leaving Fredonia, Plattsburgh State and The College at Brockport battling for the final two spots. Potsdam now sits fourth in the conference with 14 points, while Fredonia and Plattsburgh State are tied for fifth with 13 points apiece. Brockport, who was idle on Friday night, ranks seventh with 11 points.
Plattsburgh State moves to 12-11-1 overall (6-8-1 SUNYAC) with the tie and closes out its regular season at rival Oswego tomorrow at 7 p.m. Cortland moves to 9-13-2 overall (4-9-2 SUNYAC) with the result and hosts Potsdam tomorrow at 7 p.m. in its final game of the season.
Cortland scored 1:36 into the game, as senior forward Paul Fregeau found twine on assists from sophomore forward Sean Perichak and freshman forward Scott Docherty.
The Cardinals countered by striking twice in the second period, finishing with a 12-7 edge in shots on goal for the stanza. Junior forward
Cole Stallard (Atlanta, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) netted his seventh goal of the year 7:26 into the period on assists from sophomore forward

Cortland's sophomore forward Douglas Elgstam tied the game 52 seconds into the third period, relying on assists from sophomore defenseman Martin Lavallee and senior goaltender Drew Weigman.
Plattsburgh State pressured Cortland in the five-minute overtime period, putting nine shots on target. Weigman stood tall in goal for the Red Dragons, however, and helped Cortland battle to a 2-2 tie.
The Cardinals finished with a 40-26 edge in shots on goal, while neither team scored on the power play. Plattsburgh State was 0-for-2 with the extra attacker, while Cortland was 0-for-5 with the extra skater.

Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) turned aside 24 shots in goal for the Cardinals, while Weigman made 38 saves for the Red Dragons.
