PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The 14th ranked Plattsburgh State men's basketball team is now 2-0 to start the season after battling Skidmore (1-1) to an 83-75 win in their home opener Wednesday night inside Memorial Hall Gymnasium.
Four Cardinals scored in double digits; senior guard
Brandon Johnson (Greenburgh, N.Y./Woodlands) led the Cardinals with 18 points while senior forward
Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y. / Harborfields) and junior guard
Nick DeAngelis (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) each recorded 16 points and senior forward
Isaiah Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS for Dual Language and Asian Studies) scored 13.
Plattsburgh State out-rebounded Skidmore 43-31.
Senior forward
Ian Howard (Queens, N.Y./Springfield Gardens) picked up a team high 14 rebounds, Patron had nine and both Hill and senior guard/forward
Chris Middleton (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) each had five.
Plattsburgh State kept a small lead on Skidmore in the first half and with 3:54 left went on an eight point run for a 12 point advantage.
Middleton put in a jumper followed by three-pointers from Hill and Johnson.
The Thoroughbreds were able to come within four points and the Cardinals headed into halftime up 37-33.
Skidmore tied the game 37-37 in the first minute of the second half.
Plattsburgh State took a ten-point advantage with 13:56 remaining after getting momentum off a dunk from Johnson.
Skidmore battled and came within two points three times before the Cardinals took and kept a comfortable lead.
In the last minute, Plattsburgh State went 5-6 in free throws to edge out the Thoroughbreds 83-75.
Skidmore recorded 16 turnovers, which the Cardinals scored 20 points off.
The Cardinals had 18 assists with Johnson, Patron and sophomore guard
Travis Cox (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Frederick Douglass Academy) all having four compared to Skidmore's 13.
Plattsburgh State is away Friday to play Canton at 5 p.m.
