PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) recorded a double double in the Plattsburgh State women's basketball season opener 59-52 win over Norwich Saturday evening in Memorial Hall gymnasium.
Plattsburgh State starts the year 1-0 while Norwich falls to 0-1.
DePasquale scored 11 points and picked up 11 rebounds.
Junior guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) led the team with 13 points while picking up seven rebounds.
Freshman guard/forward
Kelly Degnan (Irvington, N.Y. / Irvington) made her collegiate debut with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Junior forward
Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) recorded nine points as well.
The Cardinals led 9-0 in the first three minutes after junior guard
Christina Testa (Oyster Bay, N.Y. / Oyster Bay) put in two three-pointers followed by Merkel with a jumper and a free throw.
Plattsburgh State out-scored Norwich 20-10 by the end of the first quarter.
Norwich out-scored Plattsburgh State 15-11 in the second quarter but the Cardinals led 31-25 at halftime.
The Cadets came into the third quarter with more momentum putting up 12 points compared to the Cardinals 11.
Norwich tied the game 42-42 in the first minute of the final quarter.
DePasquale drained a three to take the lead back followed by sophomore guard
Theresa Quinn (Cromwell, Conn. / Cromwell) with a jumper.
The Cadets went on a seven-point bender to tie the game 50-50 with 2:37 left.
The Cardinals ended the game with a seven-point spree to win the game.
Degnan put in a layup and both Durnin and Degnan made two free throws for the 59-52 outcome.
Plattsburgh State is home Friday, Nov. 16, to play New England College on day one of the Cardinal Classic.
