Two Second-Half Goals Hurt Men's Soccer in 2-0 Loss to No. 18/24 Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Despite holding No. 18/24 SUNY Cortland scoreless through one half of play, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team was unable to match two second-half goals by the Red Dragons in a 2-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) setback Saturday afternoon at Stadium Red.

Cortland is ranked at No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Men's National Top-25 Poll and No. 24 in the D3soccer.com Men's Top-25 Poll.

Senior forward Migell Ormsby scored both Cortland goals, finding the back of the net in the 60th and 82nd minutes.

Plattsburgh State drops to 5-5-2 overall (3-2-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts SUNY Oneonta on Friday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m. Cortland rises to 10-1-2 overall (4-1-0 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts Fredonia on Friday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m.

In the first half, Cortland outshot Plattsburgh State, 4-0, and the Red Dragons' best scoring chance in the opening stanza came from a shot by junior midfielder Jake Keller. Keller curled a 25-yard shot that went just wide left of the goal.

Ormsby scored the game-winner in the 60th minute, curling a 25-yard shot from the left side inside the right post on a loose ball. In the 82nd minute, Ormsby added insurance. Freshman forward Anthony Ruggiero fed a pass to Ormsby on a quick counter, and Ormsby ripped a shot inside the right post from the left side of the 18-yard box.

Plattsburgh State tried pressuring in the closing minutes of the match, but Cortland prevented the Cardinals from generating a quality scoring chance.

The Red Dragons finished with a 9-4 edge in shots, but the Cardinals held the upper hand in corner kicks, 5-3.

Junior midfielder Connor Nembach (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) was the lone Cardinal to put a shot on frame in the contest.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) turned aside two shots in the loss for Plattsburgh State, while junior goalkeeper Sean Kelly made one stop in the shutout victory for Cortland.
