Women's Volleyball Concludes Season With Two Wins Over Sage

TROY, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team wrapped up its 2018 season with a pair of non-conference wins over The Sage Colleges on Saturday at Kahl Gym, defeating the Gators, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-10, 25-19), in the first match of the day before completing the sweep with a 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-18) victory in the nightcap.

Plattsburgh State finishes the season at 8-21 overall, while Sage concludes the year at 5-24 overall.

Plattsburgh State 3, Sage 1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-10, 25-19)

The Cardinals limited the Gators to .034 hitting during the first match in addition to holding the upper hand in service aces (7-5), blocks (11-8) and digs (82-81).

Sage used a late run to take a 23-22 lead in the first, but coming out of a timeout, Plattsburgh State scored three straight points on a kill by junior outside hitter Megan Hyde (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont), a bad set and an attacking error to win the set, 25-23.

The Gators never trailed in the second, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals nearly came back from a 23-18 deficit, as a kill by junior outside hitter Brianna Coon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) drew Plattsburgh State within two at 24-22. Sage won the ensuing point to take the second, 25-22.

Plattsburgh State used an 11-0 run in the third to take a sizable lead and cruised to a 25-10 victory in the set.

In the fourth, the Gators fought back after trailing 20-14, going on a 5-1 spurt to pull within two at 21-19. The Cardinals then scored the final four points of the set, and a solo block by sophomore middle blocker Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) gave Plattsburgh State a match-clinching 25-19 set win.

Hyde recorded career-highs in kills (18) and digs (17) to pace the Cardinals, while Simmons floored 12 kills and added eight total blocks (three solo, five assist). Sophomore setter/defensive specialist Allyssa Rock (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) and freshman setter/opposite Lauren DeVoe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) combined for 34 assists while guiding the Plattsburgh State attack in a 6-2 offense. Sophomore defensive specialists Maddy Zophy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Abby Bone (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) and freshman defensive specialist Elora Sherman (Huntington Station, N.Y./Harborfields) joined Hyde in double-digit dig figures with 24, 13 and 10, respectively.

For Sage, freshman outside hitter/setter Emma Parkington landed 10 kills, while junior libero Lidia LoPorto defended 30 digs.

Plattsburgh State 3, Sage 0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-18)

An extra-point win in the first set established the tone for the Cardinals in the second match of the day, and they wound up having an easier time in the second and third sets to complete the sweep.

The Gators overcame a 20-17 deficit in the first set, and a modest 3-0 run tied the score at 20-all. Both teams traded points until Sage took a 23-22 lead on kills from junior outside hitter Megan Ryder and sophomore outside hitter Gabby Rowell. Plattsburgh State countered by bringing up set point with a kill by Simmons and a Zophy service ace, but Sage wound up tying the score at 24-all. The two teams battled until a pair of Gator miscues ultimately handed the Cardinals a 28-26 victory in the set.

Plattsburgh State broke open a 17-all tie with a 6-1 surge in the second, and kills by freshman middle blocker/opposite Meghan O'Brien (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) and Simmons punctuated a 25-19 victory for the Cardinals in the set.

A seven-point Cardinal tear that included a pair of service aces by Rock staked Plattsburgh State to a 15-10 advantage in the third, and the Cardinals continued to cruise on their way to a match-clinching 25-18 triumph in the frame.

The stat sheet favored Plattsburgh State in hitting percentage (.102-to-.077), service aces (7-2) and digs (67-57), but Sage outblocked the Cardinals by a 7-3 margin.

Simmons and freshman middle blocker/opposite Ann Beauchamp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) paced Plattsburgh State with eight kills each, while Rock distributed 18 assists. Sherman (15), Zophy (14), Bone (13) and Hyde (11) all recorded double figures in digs.

Rowell led Sage with eight kills, while Ryder and LoPorto defended 18 and 13 digs, respectively.
