Men's Soccer Downed by Brockport, 2-0, in SUNYAC Tournament First Round

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The sixth-seeded Plattsburgh State men's soccer team fell, 2-0, to third-seeded The College at Brockport in the first round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Bob Boozer Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) stood tall in the loss for the Cardinals, making a career-high nine saves. His counterpart, junior goalkeeper Tautis Poniskaitis, posted a two-save shutout for the Golden Eagles.

Plattsburgh State ends its season at 6-9-3 overall, while Brockport rises to 13-4-2 with the win and moves on to the semifinal round, where it will visit second-seeded SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The first shot of the game did not come until midway through the first half, as Brockport's freshman Ayub Jeylani beat the last line of defense and put a header on net, but Wilson came up with the stop. The Golden Eagles did finally break through in the 27th minute, however, as sophomore midfielder Matheus Oliveira headed in a corner kick from junior forward Jeff Hibbard.

Freshman forward Matthew Stefaniw added insurance for Brockport in the 78th minute, blasting a ball into the upper 90. While the Cardinals received two corner kick opportunities down the stretch, the Golden Eagles were able to keep the visitors off the board to preserve the shutout.

Senior Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) led Plattsburgh State with two shots, while sophomore defender Luke Rapaport (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) and junior defender Joe Gula (New Market, Md./Oakdale) each put a shot on frame.

Brockport finished with a 13-7 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

It marked the final game for seniors Jack Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), Taka Fukushima (Noda, Japan/Municipal Kashiwa), Amani Francois (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison), Austin Tetreault (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) and Alex Price (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown).
