PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team opened up the exhibition portion of its schedule with a 5-0 victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Per NCAA rules for exhibition contests, neither the statistics nor the result count toward the Cardinals' record.
The Cardinals dominated the shot margin, finishing with a 51-5 edge in shots on goal. They also went 1-for-10 on the power play and held the Kangaroos scoreless with the extra attacker.
Sophomore forward
Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Pens Elite) paced the Cardinal offense, recording three points on one goal and two assists while finishing with a +2 rating.
Plattsburgh State concludes its exhibition schedule on Saturday, Oct. 27, at home against the Ottawa Lady 67's Intermediate AA team. The opening puck drop is set for 3 p.m. Canton opens up its regular season at home on Friday, Oct. 26, at 4 p.m. against Buffalo State.
After an uneventful first period in which Plattsburgh State outshot Canton, 12-0, the Cardinals finally got on the board with 5:19 gone in the second. Senior defenseman
Maci Hoskins (Oklahoma City, Okla./Northwood School) played the puck from behind the goal line up to sophomore defenseman
Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) at the top of the left face-off circle, and Killeen took a shot that was blocked. Junior forward
Jen Manning (Marlborough, Mass./Massachusetts Spitfires) corralled the rebound in the low slot and backhanded a shot past the sliding Canton goaltender to stake the Cardinals to a 1-0 lead.
With 59 seconds left in the second period, freshman forward
Moe Tsukimoto (Sapporo, Japan/Northwood School) buried her first collegiate goal in exhibition action. Katonka's centering pass in the low slot bounced off a skate and popped out to senior forward
Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon), who tried a wrap-around shot from the left edge of the right face-off circle. Moriarty's shot got clogged up in traffic out in front of the crease, and Katonka tried to jab the puck in, only to be denied by the Kangaroo goalie. Tsukimoto then poked in Katonka's rebound to hand Plattsburgh State a 2-0 advantage.
Katonka scored on the power play with 2:10 elapsed in the third to make it a 3-0 game. Junior defenseman
Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) took a shot from just inside the blue line that was saved before Moriarty tried burying the rebound, which Canton's goalie turned aside with a pad save as well. Katonka was waiting just outside the crease, however, and put the puck into the back of the net.
Sophomore forward
Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) entered the goal column with 7:35 gone in the third period. Killeen took a shot from the left point that Katonka redirected before Brush tipped the puck past the goal line.
Finally, 11:37 into the third period, sophomore forward
Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) scored what wound up being the game's final goal. Sophomore forward
Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) skated down the left wing on the rush and took a shot that was turned aside by Canton's goaltender. Drew-Mead crashed the net and buried the rebound low glove side. Manning also was credited with an assist on the play.
Senior goaltender
Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) earned the win in net for the Cardinals, making two saves, while freshman goaltender
Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) made her collegiate exhibition game debut and turned aside three shots in 18:31 of work to preserve the shutout. Junior goaltender Brooke Susac finished with 46 saves in the loss for Canton.
