NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team added to the win column Tuesday night with a 54-48 victory over Norwich University inside Andrews Hall.
The Cardinals move to 7-13 overall while Norwich falls to 7-10.
Sophomore guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) led the Cardinals with 14 points, junior guard
Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) scored 13, sophomore guard
Brooke Benna (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) recorded 12 and junior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) had nine points and six rebounds and sophomore forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) picked up six rebounds as well.
Durnin started the game with a three-pointer and Thompson made a three to put Plattsburgh State up by four. Durnin drained another three to take a five point edge but Norwich made a three-pointer and a jumper to tie the game 9-9.
A free throw from the Cadets put them ahead by one point but freshman guard/ forward
Lauren Lawliss (Peru, N.Y. / Peru) ended the quarter with two free throws to put Plattsburgh State up 11-10 after the first quarter.
The Cardinals out-shot the Cadets 16-10 in the second quarter including four three-pointers, one from Durnin and three by Benna. Lawliss made a layup early in the second and Thompson finished the quarter with two free throws to give Plattsburgh State a 27-20 advantage at halftime.
Plattsburgh State took their largest lead of 16 points three minutes into the third quarter thanks to three three-pointers from Thompson, DePasquale and Durnin.
Norwich cut the Cardinals lead to eight points with 22 seconds left in the third but two free throws from Thompson kept Plattsburgh State ahead by ten heading into the final quarter.
Norwich tried to rally in the fourth quarter, out-scoring Plattsburgh State 17-13 but the Cardinals prevailed and took the six point win.
The Cardinals are back home Friday, Feb. 2, to resume SUNYAC play as they host Oswego State at 5:30 p.m.
