POTSDAM, N.Y. – Junior guard
Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) shot 12-17 on the free throw line to lead the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team with 16 points in their 54-50 win over SUNY Potsdam Tuesday night inside Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
Plattsburgh State moves to 6-11 overall and 5-6 in the SUNYAC while Potsdam drops to 1-16 and 0-11 in the conference.
Potsdam led 13-11 after the first quarter but the Cardinals rallied in the second quarter to hold the Bears to just three points and out-scored them by 12.
The Cardinals started the second quarter off with an 11 point run. Freshman guard
Theresa Quinn (Cromwell, Conn. / Cromwell) tied the game 13-13 with two free throws to start it off, sophomore forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) made a layup, sophomore guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) put in a jumper and a three-pointer and junior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) made a layup.
Potsdam made a three-pointer for their only basket of the second quarter with 3:30 remaining.
Freshman forward
Mary McKenna (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppauge) and Thompson both made jumpers to finish the second quarter and gave Plattsburgh State a 26-16 advantage heading into halftime.
The third quarter was tied with each team scoring 11 points allowing for the Cardinals to keep their ten point edge heading into the final quarter.
Plattsburgh State took their largest lead of 12 points after Durnin made two free throws to start the fourth quarter. The Bears went on an eight point run to come within four points of the lead and the Cardinals extended it back to nine with one free throw from freshman guard
Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y. / Keene Central) and four by Thompson.
Potsdam out-scored Plattsburgh State 23-17 in the fourth and came within four points of the lead four times but times but the Cardinals second quarter kept them alive for the win.
Durnin recorded 12 points and nine rebounds, DePasquale had nine points and six rebounds and McKenna had eight rebounds and two blocks.
The Cardinals are on the road Friday, Jan. 26, to play New Paltz at 5:30 p.m.
