PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.- The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team battled it out with Middlebury College Wednesday night at the Plattsburgh State Field House Complex and fell on the opposite side of a 2-1 decision.
Plattsburgh State is now 3-2 for the season while Middlebury College moved to 2-1 overall.
Eliza van Voorhis of Middlebury College scored the Panther's first goal in the sixth minute of the game with a header off a corner kick from Alissa Huntington.
Senior
Cait Gagen (East Syracuse, N.Y. / East Syracuse-Minoa) tied the game in the 30
th minute. Gagen scored left footed from 12 yards out off a quick pass from
Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton).
With the score being tied, the second half was more intense with each team increasing their shot counts and fouls. Â
Middlebury College scored nine minutes into the second half when Leah Salzman played it in from the left side with the assist from Alex Barber.
The remainder of the game was a clash of Cardinal against Panther.
Both defenses were playing toe-to-toe and protecting their ends with most of the play being in the middle.
Brooke Knight (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) played a key role in the Cardinal defense, either by feeding the ball back to the offense quickly or running the ball up herself.
Sarah Haight (East Meredith, N.Y. / Charlotte Valley) showed determination trying to get the Cardinals second goal. Haight had a couple close chances with shots just missing the goal or hitting the post.
Haight recorded five of the Cardinals' eight shots. Gagen,
Madeline Saccocio (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schalmont) and
Rachael Moran (Hopewell Junction, N.Y. / Arlington) recorded the other three.
Middlebury College out-shot Plattsburgh State 16-8 but the Cardinals improved their shot count from two in the first half to six in the second.
Nichole Gibson (Arkport, N.Y. / Arkport) recorded five saves in the 90:00 minutes she played in goal.
The Cardinals are home on Saturday to host Skidmore College at 1 p.m.
