PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite holding a 12-11 margin in shots, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team fell, 2-0, to Johns Hopkins University in the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic championship game on Sunday afternoon at the Field House Complex.
In the consolation game, Manhattanville College edged Mount Saint Mary College, 3-2, despite being down a man following a first-half red card.
Senior forward
Nicholas Laurent (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and senior midfielder
Ian Spear (Peru, N.Y./Peru) were named to the All-Tournament Team for Plattsburgh State. Sophomore midfielder/forward Achim Younker and senior forward/midfielder Mike Sweircz from Johns Hopkins were named the Offensive and Defensive MVPs, respectively, while the remainder of the All-Tournament Team included junior forward Joseph Sadofsky from Mount Saint Mary, freshman midfielder/forward John Kyriadkidis from Manhattanville and senior goalkeeper Bryan See from Johns Hopkins.
Plattsburgh State drops to 3-2-0 overall with the loss and hosts Norwich University next on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m. Johns Hopkins rises to 4-0-0 with the win and hosts York (Pa.) College next on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m.
Johns Hopkins struck first in the 31st minute when freshman midfielder Alejandro Maclean scored unassisted from just outside the 18-yard box to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 advantage.
Sophomore midfielder
Connor Nembach (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) nearly tied the game in the 50th minute, but his shot from 40 yards out was punched away by See to keep the Blue Jays out in front. Finally, with 19.6 seconds left, junior midfielder/forward Sebastian Salathe fed Younker with a pass across the six-yard box, and Younker knocked the ball in to put the game on ice. Senior defender Jonah Muniz was credited with a secondary assist on the play.
The Cardinals also finished with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks in addition to holding the upper hand in shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) made one save in the loss for Plattsburgh State, while See turned aside four shots in the shutout win for Johns Hopkins.
