MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Junior center fielder
Dominique Zummo (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) notched her 100th career hit, as the Plattsburgh State softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Middlebury College on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals won game one, 5-4, before taking game two, 11-9.
Plattsburgh State rises to 21-15 overall with the wins and returns to Cardinal Park on Friday, April 28, hosting Buffalo State for a 3 p.m. State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader. Middlebury drops to 17-11-1 overall with the losses and next hosts Williams College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) West contest on Friday, April 28, at 5 p.m.
Game 1: Plattsburgh State 5, Middlebury 4
The Cardinals used a three-run sixth inning in game one to come away with the victory, scattering eight hits in the contest.
Plattsburgh State got on the board in the second, as freshman designated player
Taylor Fischer (Cottekill, N.Y./Rondout Valley) drove in sophomore pinch runner
Jennifer Sarcone (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) with a single to second base, and the Cardinals added to that lead in the third with an RBI single to right center by sophomore catcher
Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa).
Middlebury made it a one-run game in the third with freshman designated player Melanie Mandell's RBI single down the left-field line, and in the fifth, the Panthers took a 3-2 lead after an RBI double by junior pitcher Allison Quigley and an error.
Zummo's 100th career hit came in grand fashion, as she drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double to left field in the sixth to put Plattsburgh State on top, 5-3. While the Panthers' freshman shortstop Olivia Bravo drove in a run in the home half of the sixth to close the gap to one, the Cardinals did not allow a hit the rest of the contest to come away with the game-one victory.
Freshman first baseman
Haleigh Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) batted 4-for-4 to key the Plattsburgh State attack, while Bravo hit 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored to pace Middlebury.
Freshman pitcher
Rhea Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) earned the win in the circle for Plattsburgh State, yielding four runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out four. Her counterpart, Quigley, sustained the loss, permitting five runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out two.
Game 2: Plattsburgh State 11, Middlebury 9
The Cardinals held off the Panthers in the nightcap, as Middlebury scored five runs in the seventh before Plattsburgh State ended up recording the final out of the game.
Plattsburgh State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first on the strength of an RBI single by junior left fielder/right fielder
Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush), a run scoring on a failed pick-off attempt and a two-run single up the middle by sophomore designated player
Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson). Middlebury tied the game in the bottom of the first with freshman first baseman Marybeth Stone's RBI single and a two-run base knock by junior third baseman/second baseman Taylor Gardner that saw an extra run score on a throwing error.
Zummo and Groat posted RBI hits in the fourth, while Torres scored on a wild pitch and Zummo drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to claim an 8-4 cushion. Torres scratched across another run with an RBI triple in the sixth, while Glashoff drove in Torres on a fielding error during the Cardinals' next at-bat. Finally, in the seventh, the Cardinal advantage ballooned to 11-4 with an RBI triple by Agans.
Middlebury got one back with an RBI groundout with one out in the seventh, and after an RBI single by senior shortstop Hye-Jin Kim, senior center fielder Siobhan O'Sullivan blasted a three-run double to left field to make it a two-run game. The Cardinals induced a lineout during the next at-bat, however, to escape with the doubleheader sweep.
Zummo, Groat, Agans, Torres and junior second baseman
Amanda Tantillo (Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward) each notched multiple hits for the Cardinals, while Mandell, senior designated player Sarah Freyre and Gardner all posted three hits for the Panthers. Zummo, who entered Wednesday's doubleheader with 99 career hits, stretched her total to 102 by the end of game two.
