POTSDAM, N.Y. – Freshman first baseman
Haleigh Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) extended her hitting streak to 19 games, as the Plattsburgh State softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Clarkson University on Tuesday afternoon at Scott Field. Clarkson won game one, 2-0, while Plattsburgh State took game two, 11-9, in nine innings.
Plattsburgh State moves to 18-14 overall with the results and next visits SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, April 22, at 12 p.m. Clarkson moves to 16-12 overall with the results and visits North Country rival St. Lawrence University next on Sunday, April 23, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Game 1: Clarkson 2, Plattsburgh State 0
Clarkson plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to come away with a 2-0 victory in game one of the twinbill.
In the fifth, Clarkson's junior center fielder Summer Lancette drew a one-out walk before junior shortstop Raeanna Dunn singled to left field. Senior pitcher Jamie Bridge then singled up the middle to score Lancette before freshman designated player Michele Winn plated Dunn on an RBI groundout to stake the Golden Knights to a 2-0 lead they would not relinquish the rest of the contest.

Dominique Zummo (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and junior third baseman
Jackie Decker (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) each notched hits for the Cardinals, while Dunn batted 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Golden Knights.
Junior pitcher
Katie Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) yielded just two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five in the losing effort, while her counterpart, Bridge, threw a three-hit shutout and struck out eight.
Game 2: Plattsburgh State 11, Clarkson 9 (9 inn.)
Plattsburgh State dug itself out of an 8-1 hole in the sixth and seventh innings, and after both teams scored in the eighth, the Cardinals tallied two runs in the top of the ninth to complete the come-from-behind victory.
With the international tiebreaker in effect in the ninth, Decker moved Agans to third to lead off the inning on a sacrifice bunt. Junior third baseman
Kelsey Gage (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) then walked before junior second baseman
Amanda Tantillo (Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward) scored Agans with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Gage came home on an RBI single to center field by sophomore right fielder
Jennifer Sarcone (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield), and Plattsburgh State took an 11-9 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, junior pitcher
Taylor Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) retired the side in order to give the Cardinals the victory.
Plattsburgh State got on the board in the first inning with an RBI single by Agans that drove in sophomore shortstop
Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall), but Clarkson used an eight-run fourth to open up a commanding 8-1 advantage. During that inning, which saw the Golden Knights bat around, Clarkson notched just two hits while drawing four walks and one hit by pitch.
Agans blasted a two-run home run in the sixth to start the Cardinal rally before Plattsburgh State scored five runs in the top of the seventh. Zummo kicked off the scoring in the inning with a two-run single that plated sophomore left fielder
Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and Preiss, while Agans drove in Zummo with an error by the Clarkson right fielder on a sacrifice fly. After the Golden Knights brought the Cardinals down to their final out, Gage pushed across junior pinch runner
Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) with a single through the left side before later coming around to score during the next at-bat following a wild pitch and an RBI single by Tantillo.
The international tiebreaker began in the eighth, and both teams took advantage of a runner starting on second base. Sophomore pinch runner
Anna Fisher (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored on a wild pitch in the top half of the inning before Bridge drove in a run in the bottom of the frame to knot the tally at 9-all.
Tantillo finished with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate that included two RBI and a stolen base, while Preiss, Groat, Agans and Decker all had two hits. Notably, Agans drove in four runs to move into second place among the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) leaders in RBI with 26 for the season. For Clarkson, Bridge hit 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Smith earned the win in relief for Plattsburgh State, throwing six full innings while allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk. She also struck out six. Clarkson used three different pitchers in the loss.
