Drabin’s Three-Point Night Helps Lead Men’s Hockey Past SUNY Cortland, 4-3

College Hockey Stats Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey freshman Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) turned in three points as the Cardinals beat SUNY Cortland, 4-3, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Alumni Ice Arena on Friday. Plattsburgh State, which is now unbeaten in its last seven games, improves to 12-8-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the league, while the Red Dragons are 8-11-1 and 4-7. The Cardinals are in the midst of a five-game road stretch to close out the regular season.

Drabin had two goals and one assist, while sophomore Cole Stallard (Waleska, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) provided one goal and one assist. Sophomore Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) scored once and won 10 faceoffs, while five other Cardinals contributed one assist apiece. Classmate Ross Sloan (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades) was 13-of-17 on faceoffs and senior Brady Rouleau (Fort Macleod, Alberta/Quinnipiac) stopped 25 shots for the win.

Cortland juniors Andrew McCann and Darren McCormick and freshman Nico Gonzalez each scored, while six Red Dragons earned assists. Freshman Sean Perichak won 10 draws and junior Drew Weigman collected 34 saves in net.

Both sides were deadlocked at 1-1 after both totaling 14 shots in the opening period. McCann scored just 41 seconds into play for the hosts but Stallard equalized while on the power play at 2:51 for the Cardinals. McCormick and Drabin then traded power-play markers in the second period just three minutes apart as Plattsburgh State and Cortland were tied, 2-2, after two periods.

The visitors went ahead at 3:27 of the final stanza when Owens' wrist shot went off of the pipe and into the net. Drabin tallied another power-play goal 1:57 later to push the Cardinals up, 4-2. The Red Dragons pulled to within one at 13:43 when Gonzalez scored off of a rebound in front of the net. Weigman was pulled for the extra attacker with 1:16 remaining but a shot by Red Dragon freshman Aidan Salerno was all that could be mustered before time expired.

Plattsburgh State travels next to No. 2 Oswego State for a Saturday 7 p.m. tilt. Oswego State, which currently leads the SUNYAC regular-season standings, is ranked according to the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.
