College Hockey Stats Box Score
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team tied nationally-regarded Buffalo State College, 3-3, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's West play at the BSC Ice Arena on Saturday. Plattsburgh State, unbeaten in its last 18 games, ends the regular season at 23-1-1 overall and 16-1-1 in the league, while Buffalo State is 16-7-2 and 11-6-1. Both teams are polled according to the latest Division III national rankings.
Plattsburgh State juniors
Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Millbrook School) and
Lizzy Viola (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons U-19) and freshman
Sarah Wolf (Fairport, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks Elite U-19) all scored, with Viola netting her first collegiate goal. Six Cardinals had assists and sophomore
Kassi Abbott (North Billerica, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite U-19) collected 21 saves in her fifth start of the season.
With an assist in Saturday's game, Plattsburgh State junior
Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) upped her career point total to 140 to break a tie with Teal Gove '13 and Lynn Taylor '05 for fifth in school history. Meneghin also took sole possession of fourth in career assists (78), breaking a tie with Shannon Stewart '15. Sheeran, meanwhile, moved into a tie for fifth with Laurie Bowler '10 in career goals (71).
Buffalo State juniors Bri Carroll and Christine Harris both notched one goal and one assist, with freshman Natasha Steinle also scoring. Juniors Erin Gehen and Viivi Vaattovaara assisted and classmate Justine Silva stopped 39 shots.
The Bengals were narrowly outshot, 13-11, in the opening stanza but Carroll put the hosts up first with a power-play goal at 15:24. Plattsburgh State then knotted up the score 2:06 into the second period as Wolf took a backhanded feed from freshman
Meghan Kraus (Fort Lewis, Wash./Northern Cyclones) and stuffed home the rebound into the right side. Viola made the game 2-1 at 8:47 when her point slapshot through traffic deflected off of a Bengal skater and into the net. Steinle buried the equalizer for the hosts with only nine seconds remaining in the period.
Both sides traded goals in the final stanza. Off of Meneghin's initial shot that bounced off of Silva's glove, a crashing Sheeran punched the puck into the right side at 4:44 for a 3-2 lead. Harris' tally at 11:02, though, brought the game to its third and eventual final tie. In overtime, neither team registered a shot on net.
With the regular season now complete, Plattsburgh State turns its attention to the ECAC Women's West Championship tournament. The Cardinals, who won this year's regular-season crown to ensure a first-round bye and home-ice advantage, await an opponent to play in the semifinal round next Sunday, Feb. 26.
