PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell 59-53 to Plymouth State Friday evening at the Cardinal Classic in Memorial Hall to start their season off 0-1.
The Cardinals were down to start until layups by
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) and
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) tied the game 8-8 in the first quarter. The Panthers took the lead back then
Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) scored two points to put Plattsburgh State up 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y. / Ardsley) made a three-pointer to start the second quarter and two minutes in the Cardinals had a six point lead. Plymouth took it back with 5:13 left in the second and with 26 seconds left had a seven point advantage. Durnin made a layup in the final seconds to head into halftime down 30-25.
The Panther put up back-to-back three-pointers to take a nine point lead two minutes into the third quarter. The Cardinals cut their lead to four by the 1:13 mark but a good jumper by Plymouth gave them a 42-36 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Panthers took a nine point lead in the fourth and the Cardinals were able to come within two points after a layup by Thompson, a three-pointer by Durinin and a layup by Clare.
Both teams scored 17 points in the fourth quarter but the Panthers prevailed early on to take the six point win.
The Cardinals out-rebounded the Panthers 50-44 and had 11 steals to their 7.
Thompson recorded 15 points and six rebounds, Clare had 12 points and nine rebounds and Durnin had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Plattsburgh State will play Clarkson University Saturday in the consolation game at 1 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
