Women's Volleyball Upended by Two-Time Defending SUNYAC Champion Brockport, 3-0

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team was unable to match the firepower of two-time defending conference champion The College at Brockport during State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at SUNY Geneseo's Schrader Gymnasium on Friday afternoon, falling, 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-20), to the Golden Eagles. Geneseo is hosting a six-team SUNYAC Pool Play pod, marking the second of three weekends of SUNYAC play this season.

Brockport fashioned a .272 hitting percentage during the match while holding an 9-5 advantage in service aces, a 3-2 edge in blocks and a 46-40 margin in digs.

Plattsburgh State drops to 6-13 overall (0-4 SUNYAC) with the loss and closes out the weekend tomorrow with matches against SUNY Cortland (12 p.m.) and Buffalo State (2:30 p.m.). Brockport rises to 11-7 overall (4-0 SUNYAC) with the win and faces host Geneseo (12 p.m.) and SUNY New Paltz (5 p.m.) tomorrow.

Brockport scored eight unanswered points early in the first set to build a 9-2 advantage before freshman middle hitter/right side Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) broke up the run with a kill. After the Golden Eagles extended their advantage to 13-4, Plattsburgh State took a timeout and responded with a 4-1 run of its own. Freshman outside hitter Rachel Mennonna (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) capped off the tear with a service ace to cut the deficit to six at 14-8. Brockport seized control of the momentum for good by winning six straight rallies and took the first set, 25-10.

Both teams battled early in the second set, and the Cardinals tied the score after trailing, 9-4, early in the stanza. Plattsburgh State relied on a 6-1 surge to knot the tally at 10-all, and the two teams continued to go point for point until Brockport rattled went on a 10-1 run to claim the second, 25-16.

Down 19-12 in the third, Plattsburgh State showed mettle by nearly batting all the way back. The Cardinals pieced together a 7-1 spurt, which included a pair of service aces by senior right side Lexi Pascal (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and one service ace by Mennonna, and a setting error by the Golden Eagles drew the Cardinals within one at 20-19. Brockport, which used a timeout after that previous Plattsburgh State point, bounced back with a pair of kills, but sophomore outside hitter/right side Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) made it a two-point score with a kill during the ensuing rally. Brockport finished the set with three unanswered points to clinch the match with a 25-20 triumph in the third.

Mennonna led the Cardinals with four kills, while sophomore right side/setter Brianna Coon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) dished out 12 assists. Mennonna and Pascal led Plattsburgh State at the service line with three and two service aces, respectively, while sophomore libero Bryanne Yasui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Monalua) paced the back row defensively with 22 digs.

For Brockport, freshman middle hitter Meaghan Mastro and junior outside hitter DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore paced the attack with nine kills apiece, while senior setter Noelle Poloncarz distributed 25 assists. Junior outside hitter Jamie Schlesinger floored four service aces, while junior defensive specialist Maddy Taylor defended 14 digs.
